You may notice a few things missing from WeBlogBetter.com’s design. I’ve eliminated the Facebook fan page widget, the Twitter list widget, the two remaining banner ads, and some other odds and ends. Why? Well, partly because of yesterday’s post and the discussion that followed in the comments.
I think there are different styles of blogs. Some are clean, white, and minimalist. Others are busy, noisy magazines. I wanted this blog, in particular, to resemble the style of the average personal blog, primarily because that’s for whom I’m usually writing.

Designing email newsletters stinks! Someone had to say it. Some look nice, but any designer knows you have to go back at least five years in modern design and development practices to design for email clients. Tables… ugh!

Mediocre makes money. You’ll get paid if you do mediocre stuff in life. Do your job, punch the clock, collect the check. In the world of blogging… get a decent domain, throw up a Wordpress site, aggregate some good content, integrate adsense, make some Christmas spending money. Do it one hundred times, all mediocre of course, and you’ll multiply the income possibilities of your mediocrity.

Micro-blogging, as in Tumblr and Posterous, both of which are excellent micro-blogging platforms. The beauty of both is in the ease of posting stuff from anywhere by email, bookmarklet, or the web, and in aggregating feeds from multiple sources into a kind of fused micro-blog.

Out of millions of blogs on the internet, few rise to the top as well-designed. Perhaps we feel that we can type a lot of words and get away with cruddy design, but that mentality really needs to change. If we’re going to blog with excellence, we must be inspired to design the frame in which our content is presented.
