The aim of this post is to help you make sure that people do open and read the emails you send to them. Sometimes you find that your 1st and 2nd email gets opened then the number drops from 3rd email onwards. It’s always said that the money’s in the list but it’s also sad when you spend a lot of money, energy and time to build an email list of people who don’t even open you emails.
How To Increase Email Open Rate
The best way to make sure people open your emails is to be entertaining and informative. Just like a TV Series or Talk Radio Show you wouldn’t miss for anything. People need to be hungry for your next email if you want to increase your open rate.
In order to achieve this, you’ll need to be both an entertainer in some way. Even if your emails are controversial or answer a question they need to be entertaining.
When you entertain people they start talking about you, spreading the word and that will easily grow your number of subscribers getting more people to open and read your emails.
Always try to come up with a story that is related to the email you’re sending. It could be about you or someone else. People love stories, but make sure you keep it short and it will be great if it’s a funny story. People will know, like and trust you if they know that you’ve been where they are.
The reason I love blogs is that it’s easy to build trust using your content, that is why I recommend all business to start blogging if they haven’t done so.
Once a person joins your list in the 1st email tell them a story and what they should expect in the following emails. Tell them to always wait and expect an email from you. Also use famous quotes and facts to support your story. Use celebrities and movie quotes as well.
Create a Teaser
Create a teaser by telling them what tomorrow’s email will be about. Something like “this is just the beginning watch out for my next email which reveals the best 5 tips for…” When they see that they will open it because they were expecting to read the tips for a problem they want to solve.
Your teaser needs to have what is called an “Open Loop.” You tell the subscriber about how the 5 tips will help them. For instance, the tips I’ll be sharing with you helped John from john.com take his blog traffic from zero readers to 1000 a day. The subscriber already knows what to expect so no need to crack your head coming up with compelling email subjects.
All you’ll need to do is use a subject such as “As Promised – Here are your 5 tips…” then share a short story about John and his blog and give them the 5 tips.
Have Your Own Style
You need to have your own identity and style of speaking to your subscribers. Finding your own voice is not hard, you just need to be yourself and be honest. If you use your email list for solo ads or email swaps then you need to write your own copy to avoid any complications.
Stick to one style of writing and avoid using outsourced stuff. If it’s outsourced then make sure it’s from one source or do the editing yourself and keep it in one style. Remember to be entertaining, controversial, informative and answer questions. You don’t need to be an expert writer and if spelling is a problem then use Microsoft Office, it’s good because it also corrects grammar.
Just as long as the information is entertaining and valuable then the rest wont really matter.
You can also answer questions from subscribers in your emails or create a special Q&A email maybe every Tuesday. The format is really simple, you write the question and then an in depth answer.
Always keep it short. At least 3 questions with detailed answers, a good reason to keep it short is to make sure you always have questions to answer as part of your newsletter.
That will also increase engagement. But there are some questions that are not worth sharing so just give that person a reply.
Mix your Q&A emails with your inspiration emails. Use Youtube videos and latest new or success stories to keep your subscribers motivated. You can do this as a separate email but it’s a good choice to use it with the Q&A and news/updates email.
Email Frequency That Won’t Decrease Open Rates
Using an open loop allows you to control the emailing frequency (when to send an email). I would advise you to email everyday if you can’t then at least 3 times a week. You need to frequently send them valuable information. If you’re promoting a product then with the first 3 emails just include the affiliate link in the signature before pitching it to them.
Try to promote 1 product per month to your subscribers, avoid sending them tons of different products. It would be great if the product you’re promoting is your own product. Just make sure the product is related and solves a specific problem they have. Give them the Why and sell them the How!
Another tip is to use a check list email. For instance, you can say “before you start sending traffic to your squeeze page make sure it has these 5 most important elements…”
Make sure you always have a link in your signature or link to other resources in your emails so that the subscribers gets used to seeing links in your emails. That makes it easy for them to click a link to a product when you recommend it.
If you’re struggling to write good email copy then subscribe to as many emails as you can then if you find a few that make you want to buy something then put those in one section.
Don’t unsubscribe to any, if you find one that you just want to get removed then put those in one section as well and study both. See why you wanted to unsubscribe and study the other ones to see what made you want to buy. Then use all that info to improve your email open rates.
The more you practice the more you get better. Obviously it’s not going to be easy, if email marketing was easy then there would be no people packing boxes at Shoe-World or Walmart. So be patient and stay consistent. Hope the info I just shared really helps you and increases your email open rates.
Happy Email Marketing!
