6 Qualities of Healthy Blog

healthy blogI love the voice blogging has given back to the people.  It seems that at one point or another, everyone has jumped on the blogging bandwagon, but not all could hang on, some blogs I used to follow just a year or two ago are now playing to an audience of crickets.  No updates, no new posts, photos… nothing.

So when I find a blog that is not only interesting to read, but is updated regularly, I get excited.

Spunky individual with a penchant for culinary delights. Lover of all things pickle-related and photographing what goes in my tummy. Likes? Chick-fil-A, Greek yogurt, beets, pickles, baking, and men who are attractive. Dislikes? Waiting for things to finish baking, bad grammar, slow walkers, being a mess, and people that take up my personal space.

One such blog that has excited me recently is Hungry Meets Healthy.  This 3-time winner of the Best of Charleston Local Interest Blog Awards and 2011 winner of the Carolina Bloggin’ Weblog Awards is run by Christina, a Charleston Blogger who shares fun and lighthearted tidbits of herself as she strives to live a healthier lifestyle.

I slip easily into the “internet time warp” whenever I visit this blog, as I scroll and click from one story to the next.  There’s a continuity on her blog that is refreshing – you can easily follow what’s going on in her life as she shares highlights without bogging you down with too much information.  This is a wonderful quality that creates great anticipation for readers as they ponder what she will write next.

Her posts are full of great pictures.  I love the things she shares on some Wednesdays and Fridays – she often shares cool things she’s purchased for her home and herself.   She’s recently completed a 25 Day Detox and wrote about her findings.  A few months ago, her NYE (New Year’s Eve) Challenge, had me anxious to read the update.

In addition to that, she recently held a Crest 3D White Toothpaste & Rinse Giveaway that even I took a moment to enter!  Who doesn’t need more dental hygiene products?  :)  I didn’t win… but I had so much fun entering.

I loved the hilarious way she prompted people to enter – she made it mandatory to post a comment that answers the question:

Do you squeeze your toothpaste from the bottom up, or do you just squeeze anywhere on the tube?

(Visit the giveaway post if you want to see how I answered the question)

I was immediately impressed by 6 things I noticed about this blog:

  • the clean design
  • engaging writing style
  • likeable, trustworthy personality behind the blog
  • high posting frequency
  • quality images
  • cool giveaways, contests, other outreach activities

These are simple things that will help grow an audience of followers that local business owners would eagerly pay for a chance to advertise.  And yet, so many new bloggers ignore them.

These qualities separate the dead blogs from the read blogs. It’s a truly entertaining blog that inspires me to try new things – I know they’re worth trying when she says so – and that’s what a truly influential blogger does.  Influential bloggers are successful at giving us the inside view we’re all looking for when we are on the brink of trying something new because we know we can trust them.

Obviously, developing an award-winning blog such as Hungry Meets Healthy takes time, but it’s these kind of blogs that create a win/win opportunity for both bloggers and local business owners.

I encourage you to stop by her blog – browse and see if you can incorporate some of the things she’s doing into your own blog.
