How To Bring Your Blog To Life With Video

Why Use Video?

Embedded video content in blog posts can go a long way to help you liven up text heavy posts and help you get your point across. However, no style of video works better than video you create yourself. Whether these videos are shot on webcams, consumer video cameras, smartphones or even illustrated animations, by creating unique video content for your blog you can truly bring both your site and your blog topics to life.

So how do you go about creating great video content for your blog?

Know What You’re Talking About

The best way to create engaging video for your blog is to know your topic through and through. Make sure you’ve researched your subject area well and even take time to script what you want to say in your video.

Having a solid subject knowledge on the tip of your tongue will minimize the chances of you stumbling on your words and establish you as a confident, thought leading blogger.

Remember Your Audience

When it comes to your audience you need to know the sort of topics they find the most appealing and also the format they enjoy digesting them in. Do they prefer illustrations, guest speakers, on-screen text, slideshow presentations, or straightforward webcam based videos? Getting the topic and the format right for your audience will undoubtedly increase the popularity of your content.

Don’t forget that whilst your direct audience comes first, try to think about the experience for causal blog visitors. If you can accommodate users who are new to your area and your site you will be able to turn those casual visitors into repeat viewers and subscribers.

Stick To Short & Simple

Taking a simple approach to your video content is far more effective than trying to cover four or five topics at once. Remember, there’s nothing wrong with creating several videos. In fact doing so will not only give you more content, but also allow you to market to and address your target audience for each video much easier.

When creating and editing your video blogs always think – short and sharp. As a video blogger you will come attached to your content and see every second as being worthwhile, but unfortunately your viewers will not feel the same. Keeping your video under the three minute mark is usually a perfect duration to aim for

Go For Fresh & Refreshed Content

By making sure your video blog is always up to date with the hottest industry news in your niche, you’ll be able to take the traffic searching for information on such topics and steer them towards your site, where you’ll be able to deliver them exactly what they are looking for in a far more engaging way than text-based posts.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that old written content that you may have on your blog that still benefits a consistent flow of traffic could be another great opportunity for video. Refreshing this content and giving it a new lease of life will connect far better with its viewers and help to further boost the profile of the video channel you are using to host your content, giving you a great deal of online benefits in the process.

Be Informative, Educational & Entertaining

Our final tip for blogging with video is to remember the three golden rules of video making, which are to always be informative, educational and entertaining to your audience.

Admittedly it’s not often possible to tick all three boxes in one video, but hitting one or two in every episode will help to ensure your video blog is well received by your target audience and maybe by many others outside of your niche.

  5. Not all blog readers or visitors are patient enough to read long and dull text. Some visitors prefer watching a video that would explain straightforwardly a topic without hurting their eyes. Thanks for sharing hints on how we can improve and enliven our blogs with video.

  6. I enjoyed Topher’s video. He is right, adding a video to a blog (or any other kind of mainly text-based website) can really bring that content to life. One worry I have is the issue of scripting. We do a lot of high-end commercial and corporate video productions in Scandinavia. What I find is that people come across as much more natural, relaxed and convincing, if they don’t follow a script. Actors and news anchors can follow a script well, but ordinary people in front of a camera often do this less well. What we do is that we film with multiple cameras and do multiple takes where they just talk naturally about each point they want to make. We then put it all together in post. If scripting isn’t working out, you can try doing something like this at home.

  7. I definitely agree with the “know what you are talking about” part. Too often people talk about things that they know little about, acting like they are some kind of know it all. Also. fresh content is essential for a sucessful blog. Nobody wants to read the same thing over and over again.

  11. I have noticed that there’s been an increase in posts with videos. It makes sense, why not take what youtube and similar sites thrive on and use it to attract viewers. But, like you say, there has to be some content and reason for it to be viewed, so it’s important to utilize these tools in the right way.

  12. Video is the best option besides infographics to explain any content or to review a product. But to make the audience watch the entire video it must be attractive and fascinating or else they will leave the video in middle itself.

  16. Hello Kiesha!

I think the part, Know What You’re Talking About, is very key to doing a great video. Like it was pointed out, knowing your subject matter will help your words just flow smoothly out, and it will be less likely that you will stumble or get tongue twisted.

Also, the point about keeping your video short and to the point is great advice. It helps viewers get exactly what they are looking for, and most importantly, it creates an environment where the viewer will finish watching your video instead of cancelling out early :)

    Thank you!

  26. I love blog posts with video’s explaining something or showing me a new product or a cool tip I should know about. On the other hand I have only made a few videos myself. The reason for that is properly that it takes a big effort and a lot of time to shoot and edit a good video. That does not change anything about the fact that videos can be very powerful on a blog when they are used in the right context.
