Twitter, one of the most popular internet marketing social platforms can get you huge targeted, high quality traffic. But you can lose your followers if you don’t know how to use and maintain a popular business twitter account. People use twitter for various purposes, some use for personal use, some signup for promotional objectives and some users connect with their friends, followers and business associates using their twitter account.
Here, you will find 6 major reasons why a twitter-star starts losing his followers over time.
6 reasons why you are unfollowed on Twitter:
Some business owners buy twitter followers to plan promotional business campaigns. But most marketers fail to retain the followers forever. In many cases, active twitter users unfollow overly promotional, inactive and spammy accounts. You must avoid the followings to avoid a twitter-fail and get more followers on twitter.
#1 Your twitter account is in dormant mode
If your twitter account is in dormant mode, you can’t expect the followers to keep following you. The status refers to your inactivity, irregularity and prolonged absence on twitter. This is potentially dangerous for a business account on twitter. Make sure you log into twitter regularly, post tweets and share news with your followers and associates.
#2 Your tweets are repetitive, tedious and inconsistent
Your tweets reflect your personality, thoughts and ideas. Every time you post a tweet, you have to share something helpful and interesting. Don’t repeat your tweets; make sure the tweets contain factual, interesting information for your followers. At the same time, you should maintain consistency in your tone and tweeting style. This will keep your follower base intact and let it grow automatically.
#3 You use tweeter for promotional purpose exclusively
Many users use twitter for commercial purposes exclusively. These accounts always talk about special promotions, deals and discounts. If the audience isn’t interested in the deals, discounts or promotions you’re offering, they will definitely unfollow you. You should definitely use twitter in a rational way. Make sure you share something interesting and resourceful regardless of anything. Or you should target your follower groups while sharing commercial tweets.
#4 You don’t follow back other the followers
Thousands of internet marketers are struggling to learn how to get more followers on twitter. Unless you know the secret, it’s really difficult to build a massive follower base on the busy social platform. An effective method of rapid growth of a twitter account is to follow back your follower. Sharing is caring- when you are connected with the community, it will automatically bring followers to you over time.
#5 You don’t interact with your friends and followers
Twitter is a nice place to hang out; connect with friends and associates globally. You can share the news on a busy, popular social platform and spread words in seconds. If you don’t interact with your friends and followers, fail to answer their questions, things can go against you. Gradually, you will lose the active, potential followers that could make you profits. Pay attention to what your friends and followers say, talk to them with a friendly, helpful attitude.

Thanks for this helpful post. Overly tweeting about you or your company is some of the reasons why you are being unfollowed on twitter. This is what I’ve learned from other blogger’s point of view and of course from reading this post. Tweeting about other works that might be helpful to your follower could help you boost the number of your followers.

Hey Kiesha,
Nice post and Yes, twitter is a good way to promote our blog and people unfollow us only if we are not interested or we are not good in making relations with others. Thanks for sharing this post.

I think one big mistake is tweeting a link with no description and expecting people to be interested enough to even click on this link, let alone read whatever the link leads to.

Hi kiesha
I will be honest I haven’t got a twitter account yet. I know I am the only one left. Was just sorting it. The main reason I read thie post was to avoid the pitfalls right from the start. Basically to turn the post in to what I should do and not what I shouldn’t do if you know what I mean.
Thanks for the info lee

It is important to be active on social networking sites to gain the attention of the audience. In Twitter we might get unfollowed by some one due to our repeated and spammy tweets. This may happen even if our activity is zero for too many days.

Kiesha,
I had been using Twitter and I saw an uptick in visits to my blog that I could only contribute to Twitter. But I have ran into a snag. I reached the 2000 mark in people I was following and only 1400 were following me back. Now I am capped and can no longer follow anyone. I stopped following a few but it is not enough to raise my followers. What should I do?
I have also created lists of the people I follow and that works well for me. And when I can’t follow, I still put people on the lists. Does that do me any good?

Hi Harley! So glad to see you here. First, to help you clean up/get rid of some of those people who are not following you, I recommend setting up an account at http://thetwitcleaner.com/ – sign in with your Twitter login info and it will create a report. It will show you different categories of people, the first I always get rid of are the ones who haven’t been active for 30 days. Next, I work on people who aren’t following me, but obviously, not all because some will be authority figures and experts that I want to follow any way. That should free up quite a few people. It’s easy to unfollow, just tap their name.
Next, to gain more followers, start following up to 20 new people a day. I like to follow people who are into blogging and social media, but obviously, you’d follow those who share your interests. Make sure to check when they last tweeted, I like to follow active people who last tweeted no longer than a day ago. Rinse and repeat this process once a month or as often as you’d like.
I hope this helps, but feel free to ask more questions. Hope all is well!! :D

most of the people we try to follow back are using the account for promotion and after some time they remove the people from there list… there are few sites which can help us in getting the real and quality analysis of the twitter account of ours so that we can know who are the real and loyal followers and who are there for numbers.

Love Twitter! It’s my absolute favorite network. BUT, I too have unfollow rules: cursing and too much self-promotion, and the ‘you unfollow me, I unfollow you’ rule :-).

Hi Kiesha
First of all thanks for posting this wonderful post covering all the reason why we get unfollowed on twitter. Definitely its very difficult to get followers on twitter as compare to other social media websites like Facebook. So I will keep above points in my mind.
If someone follow you, never forget to follow them back. I always follow this point and really the result is very awesome.

hi kiesha,
practically speaking, i have only 11 to 12 followers in twitter, their might be the reason that you have specified in this article, but the fact is most of the people still do not consider twitter as a social networking website. they still prefer facebook, that’s why it really doesn’t matter’s how many followers i have..
by the way very nice article :)

You third point is very important I think. It’s called “social” media for a reason! Today’s web goers expect our Twitter accounts to be genuine, and interacting directly with people, not just spamming promo content. Yes it can be a helpful tool for spreading promotions, but if that is all you do, people will not stick around. Your Twitter account should be used to engage and communicate with people, as well as advertise your business.

I’ll personally unfollow on Twitter if your Tweets seem at all “spammy” or make no sense. I dislike the ones that contain random symbols too, that you just know have come from an automated bot.
