The StumbleUpon website looks and feels a bit like Pinterest now, so it will feel familiar
StumbleUpon is another great social media site that you should be leveraging in order to drive traffic to your blog. With a new Pinterest-like layout as of late 2012, StumbleUpon content is easy to find and categorize by your interest.
StumbleUpon users are hungry (actually, ravenous) for content! They are also eager to share great content, and StumbleUpon relies on its users to do so, as all content is user-submitted.
Here’s how to use StumbleUpon properly to drive people to your own great blog content.
First create your profile
You can do this here. Make sure to provide a link to your blog in your profile. You can never have this link in enough places.
Add a StumbleUpon icon to your blog
Add an icon to your blog so fans can share your posts (and so you can, too!). Encourage your readers to share, share, share. The ones who really dig what you are doing will want to help you go viral—snag the StumbleUpon share icon and add it to your blog posts immediately so that your readers can start to help you (and so that you can share your own blog posts with the StumbleUpon community)!
Submit pages of interest to StumbleUpon
Start submitting pages of interest that are not just your own. Not only should you be sharing your blog posts with the StumbleUpon community, but to remain in good standing with StumbleUpon and its Terms of Service, you want to make sure you are also submitting interesting things that you’ve found online that are not your own work.
StumbleUpon works entirely upon referral and could consider it spam if one user is making too many referrals to the same place. StumbleUpon says, “Disproportionately recommending pages from a domain you own or with which you’re affiliated is frowned upon by other members of the StumbleUpon community, and can actually result in those pages being recommended by StumbleUpon even less frequently to other users.”
Enlist the help of other bloggers
When you share and like other bloggers’ content, they will be more likely in turn to follow you and help you out—especially those who have related interests. You really can help one another in this community, given that you both need to post content other than your own in addition to your own.
Write awesome content that people want to read and share.
Number ONE most important factor: Your content needs to be great! Make sure people want to share it. If it’s not interesting and people aren’t sharing it, then what is the point of even writing it?
Use tags for your content
StumbleUpon indicates that you are able to add up to five tags to a post, enabling you later to “quickly find your favorite pages in your profile later…as well as help other users find your content faster.”

as I know of stumbleupon it is one of the oldest social networking websites, the tips you mentioned here matters a lot because, in just only 1 week of starting of my blog stumbleupon gave me the traffic of 578 visites/ day. it was huge and since then I believe in stumble upon :)

Stumbleupon is good but I don’t any results from it any more. Perhaps I need to use in the ratio 80:20 so that you are not always sending yours all the time. I think the use of proper tags is also important and also category. To be honest, they have so many that its confusing most of the time.

Hi Katrina, first of all thanks for writing on StumbleUpon because no one do so. And second, you missed very important detail about stumbleupon submission, i.e. defining your submission category. As myself using stumbleupon for two years, i have learn that you need to define your submission category in order to take benefits from stumbleupon. otherwise it is a lame game for bloggers.

I’ve personally never had much luck with StumbleUpon. While I do see some spikes in traffic on sites where I’ve used it, that traffic rarely seems to stick around for very long. Even with what I consider good content this seems to still be the case as the attention span of Stumblers is so low.
Still, it’s worth looking into again. Maybe there’s a better way to approach it for improved results.

Thinking about it a bit more, I believe using StumbleUpon is specific situations could be quite useful.
If you have a lengthy blog post you are almost guaranteed to see quick exits from your page. But if you have a post that is just short and to the point or has some sort of picture/video then StumbleUpon could be excellent.
Most of the pages when you Stumble are videos or pictures, so if you stuck with just a few lines of text that were very to the point with an interesting infographic or a video that draws attention immediately you might have better luck.
