I ran across this infographic that really got me thinking. I had never really thought about how much energy it actually takes to support all the servers required to support blogs and websites.
How Green is the Internet, Really?
Chances, are you probably haven’t thought about this, either – so I invite you to have a look at this. I came to the realization that I’m contributing to this immense usage of energy and got me to thinking… maybe I should find out how much energy it takes to support my servers and what I can do to reduce the impact.

That’s some shocking information, especially the part about Google using more energy than all of Russia! It’s time we start changing the way we use and at times waste energy, for the good of the planet and our children!

Very interesting article!
Especially for me, I’m an electronic enthusiast;
I can say that simple things like power off the pc when not used can avoid unuseful energy usage.
Obviously there are more important things to do for energy efficiency, like buying efficent electrical household appliances, efficient lamps, efficient cars.
Nations however have to improve energetical sostenibility, like solar panels and eolic generators.
However the net causes great usage of electricity !!
Nicely explained about internet……. nice arrticle…… Superb, that was useful. Really this is useful to me and everyone….

All the internet contributes to pollution. The manufacturing process of making the laptop, cellphone, tablet or kindle you are using to read this contributed to pollution. Lets just hope we can discover more renewable sources of power for us to use.

This infographic is a reminder of how the internet did everyone a good thing. Imagine one year of using gmail equal sending 3 snail mail letters only. I think what we should focus on is hoping there would be more clean reusable energy available for use. Then they would be using 100% clean energy and not just around 30% of the pie.

Cool looking infographic Kiesha,
Thanks for sharing.
I can’t get into this GREEN yet thing because I don’t understand it.
One second they said it’s global warming, now they’re saying it’s something different.
I’ve never had a good experience supporting anything I didn’t understand.
That said.
If being green is important to your customers then this is an opportunity to impress them.
Every little bit counts. Why not get a “green” web host and show it off if it will help you get a sale?

Hmm.. It means we’re polluting our environment by spending more time on internet. that’s really shocking, I used to think that internet doesn’t cost anything to our environment but I was wrong.

Hi Kiesha,
It’s really valuable article which you have shared with us, however, some internet companies have made great strides towards reducing their impact by powering their facilities with renewable energy sources

I never thought about all this energy Consumption stuff while I was using FBand google for all these Years. Few years back I read an article where they mentioned to use “Blackle” instead of Google which saves tremondous amount of energy while using Google as it is having White background but it did not think it as a Serious stuff. But I guess I have figured it out why everyone was Bragging about it.
Thanks for notifying this

Whoa whoa – thanks for bringing this up Kiesha. How much energy we do waste upon sitting in front of the computers and doing little and big things without knowing the changes we create to the environmental balance. But I guess we have come to a point where we can do nothing about the usage. We could only think about how to make it all green energy!

Hi Jane,
Yeah, I think the point is that we do our best to make sure we’re using a renewable energy source that doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment. Before this point, I never really thought about the energy it consumes beyond what I use at my house – I wasn’t looking at the larger picture.
Anyway, I hope all is well with you Jane. Let me know if I can help you with anything! :)
Wow, this is fascinating. information that I honestly had never thought of before At least my own little SEO blog doesn’t take up any physical space, and the amount of storage capacity will probably continue increasing exponentially over time.

Hi Vikram,
I agree that overall, we are saving trees, but I think I needed the reminder that the Internet does have some impact on our Eco system because even though it uses less right now, its growing size could change that. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
hey Kiesha,
I heard about this before, but didn’t really give too much thought …
thank you for reminding us how everything counts, including tiny actions that touche everybody else lives.
I’m not a scientist, yet I feel this eco thing is not B.S. or marketing ploy.
