1. Keep up on current events. Whatever your niche is, you should always keep your ear to the ground for the latest news. Find the topics that interest you the most. You have to sell people on your point of view and the only way to make your content believable is to write about things that you are passionate about. Is there a current event that makes you excited and optimistic? Is there a topic that makes you really upset to the point where you can hardly contain your emotions? Any topic that creates extreme emotions is usually a great place to start when it comes to blogging.
When I really need inspiration I brush up on the most current events. I pick what really excites me (the good, the bad, and the downright ugly) and run with it! If you feel that there is a certain topic that you are passionate about but it does not fit the theme of your blog, create a blog for it and similar topics. This is why I have more than one blog.
2. Allow quality guest posts. The life of a writer can go from being very mundane and quiet to super busy. When things get a little hectic, it is a great idea to have some quality guest posters post relevant topics to your blog. This will give your blog a fresh perspective and help keep good content on your blog when you cannot. If you do this, make sure you set your expectations of your bloggers before they start posting.
You want to make sure that any content that is posted is relevant to your blog. You also want to make sure that the content is completely original. There are so many bloggers who recycle old content or even plagiarize! You do not want a horrible stain on your blog. While I am not an expert on SEO, I do know that when search engines like Google crawl web sites, they will penalize your blog if it finds that your content has been published elsewhere.
3. Get out! If you are a full-time writer, you have to get out of the house sometimes. You must be in the world in order to understand it. Sometimes it is hard to get out of our comfort zone as writers but trust me, one of the best things you can do for yourself is talk to people. This will allow you to get an idea of what people are most interested in. Some of my best conversations happen when I am in the checkout line at the grocery store.
If you are only a part-time writer because you already have a full-time job, take advantage of what is right in front of you! What are your coworkers talking about the most? Are they talking about the latest movie? Are they talking about the hottest new fashion trends or the latest celebrity gossip? Maybe that is what you should be blogging about. If any topics are exciting for you then go with those topics first. write your passion!
There are many techniques that can help you keep your blog exciting and new. I hope you have learned a few new (or have perhaps revisited) methods that will help you on your journey to becoming a successful writer and blogger.
