If you’re striving to create a professional-looking blog, at some point you’re going to need a logo to brand it. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote “How to Create a Free Logo in a Pinch” to provide some tips on how to create a logo and quickly get the design process started with free logo creation tools.
Today, for those who are ready to take the next step, I want to share some insights on where to go and what to do to get the logo you want at an affordable price. Or if you’re on the other end of the spectrum, my goal then, is to let you know about a great site to make money using your design skills.
I’ve discovered that the best way to get the logo you want is to go through a Crowdsourcing site. Sites like this let you pitch your idea to a “crowd” and then let designers approach you with their ideas and samples. Some sites require you to accept bids before the project begins – the downside to this is that if you are tempted to choose the lowest bid, you usually end up with lower quality results. But choosing the highest bidder isn’t always a safe guard, either – you could still end up not getting what you want.
So what can you do to save money and still get a great logo?

DesignCrowd.com is a crowdsourcing site that has many options for getting the best quality for your money. If you’re looking for a designer, you have some options:
You can post a description of the design you want, along with images or items you want the designers to use as inspiration. The designers will send their design samples to you via email and you then choose the one you want and pay the price the designer requests.
OR
You can arrange a logo competition – I actually like this idea the best. This works well because you can offer the amount of money you want to pay as a prize and have designers compete to create the best logo design for you. In the end, you pick the design you want and pay the price you set at the beginning.
How to Make Money
For those of you who are always on the lookout for ways to generate an income: If you’ve got graphic design skills or just have a good eye when it comes to logo creation, you might want to enter a logo design competition and compete for the prizes that vary from $50 and up.
As I browsed the site, I saw prizes as large as $710, so they are definitely worth the time and effort.
So head over to this amazing crowdsourcing site if you either want to save money or make some – either way, you probably won’t leave empty handed.

I hadn’t heard of such sites existing before. We held a contest at a local community college for our first logo, we were satisfied with the result but later paid a designer for our current logo. If the time ever comes we feel a change is needed, ill be sure to try out these options.

Good stuff. As of now, I have no logo, just a text in a very non-intrusive way. I see these competitions as auctions, designers bid with their own design and you choose the winner.

Crowdsourcing may be good for the consumer. It cheapens the industry and doesn’t allow graphic designers that make their money from logos to charge a reasonable fee.
Do you get 50 guys to mow your lawn and then pay the one who did the best job?
I got caught in this trap early on as a designer and probably spent two weeks or so working on different logos and contests. It was even suggested where I went to school to try to get my name out there to work from some of these websites. Please if you want good logo designs from people who aren’t starving use a reputable company not crowdsourcing.

Logo is one of those things that we all need for our sites. But no matter what we do, we are never happy and hence we keep getting someone to redesign them that keep costing money. I think best is to learn and do it yourself.
