If you ask anyone what they need they’ll tell you it’s more traffic. You could spend hours churning out content and your website could be one of the greatest the Internet has ever seen, but if nobody will ever see it you are wasting your time.
When people first start out they hear all these magical stories about SEO and how being at the top of Google gives you the ability to print money, but they go about it the wrong way.
They start of doing simple things like leaving comments on blogs and forums. That’s great, but it’s like painting a house with a toothbrush. It will take you a long time.
There’s millions of people trying to do the same thing as you are. They want to build traffic and keep adding great content.
They can’t do this all on their own, so that’s where you have a great opportunity to grab some of their traffic.
You can offer to write an article for them and it will include a link back to your site. This will slowly build up your search engine rankings, but it can also give you an instant traffic boost when the readers click through to your site. This all sounds great, but it’s never that easy. Let’s see how it’s done properly.
Becoming known
Before any contact is made you would be better letting your presence be known before you ask anyone for a favor. That means getting them to notice you. They probably get contacted by people wanting to write a guest post every single day and you need to stand out, otherwise your email will be lost and you won’t get any joy. The easiest thing you could do is write great comments when they publish an article. Bloggers read their comments, even if they don’t reply.
Making contact
Now you need to write something that will get their attention. The first thing you need to realize is that people with a popular site will be really busy. That means you should keep the email short and sweet. Start by introducing yourself and telling them what you like about their blog. Then tell them why your contribution would be a good fit for their readers. People won’t mind giving you an opportunity if they like you, because it means they are getting a break from writing.
Studying previous articles
You’ve been told you can write an article. That’s great, but now is when the hard part begins. You need to check through all their previous popular articles and find out why they are so popular. You could write the best article in the world, but if it’s not what their readers will enjoy you won’t get anywhere. Once you start to see what kind of thing they like it’s much easier to craft your article in the same kind of way.
Writing a compelling article
It’s time to write your masterpiece. The headline is obviously the first important thing you have to get right, so people will actually be intrigued enough to read on. Then you need to hook them into your story and keep them there until the end. The only thing you should care about is the reader making it to the end of the article, otherwise they won’t see your author box and won’t come through to your site.
Having a strong call-to-action
The final piece in the puzzle has to do with getting people back to your site. When you write your bio it should look like it’s a continuation of the article. That’s why you shouldn’t start by telling them your name. It looks too formal. Just give them a couple of sentences telling them why they should come through to your site and how they will benefit from doing so. Hopefully if they enjoyed your article they will come through anyway.

One thing I didn’t see mentioned was WOM (word of mouth) and Customer Support. I have found that much of my traffic/sales are due to my Customer Support, giving more to customers who have spent a lot on my site and of course this in turn helps me more because they tell others where to get content!
