Why Should I Comment on Blog Posts?

Final: Online ChatterHaving to think of original posts to draw in readers can be maddening.  Having to actually write down that idea in a way that’s easy to read, while being relevant and informative, is draining. We also have to think of different ways to give the article more visibility, be it for the purposes of increasing your page rank, affiliate marketing, and many more.

So the moment we finish an article, we might end up leaving it as is, letting it accumulate views and comments on its own while we start on another.

As for other people’s posts, we just read what we want and move on. Some of us just don’t have the time to leave coherent and reasonable comments, even if we found the article useful.

By doing so, we are missing out on some things that will not just benefit our readers and other writers but our own sites as well. Here are a few reasons why you should comment on blog posts:

  • To give feedback – Communication is crucial to blogging, and it can only get clearer when it’s a dialogue. Giving feedback allows the webmasters to know just what their audience is thinking. Conversely, if our readers give us feedback on the articles we uploaded, we can give them exactly what they want. We can adjust to the varied and ever-changing tastes of our audience.

Discussion can even lead to new ideas, making the process of writing even easier.

  • To have complementary content – When the content of a post is being discussed, it’s hard not to have people giving their own takes. Additional tips get thrown around, complex concepts are clarified, and problems are solved.

If we forget something important in our article, we can just mention it in our own comments section, too!

  • To build your brand – Being able to answer questions from readers (whether from our own blog or another’s) makes us look like experts in the field. People will go to us for our insights. Chances are, they will even visit our own blogs if they see us commenting on someone else’s.

We also establish bonds between readers and other writers when they see that we care enough to impart our knowledge to them.

  • To increase social proof – People can’t help but check out things that other people go crazy for. They’ll think, “There must be something worthwhile in that post when there are a lot of comments in it!”

So if people do leave comments on our posts, we can reply to each one, thereby increasing the number of total comments. When other people search for articles like ours and see the number of comments, they won’t be able to resist clicking on our site.

  • To enhance your site’s visibility – It might not be apparent at once, but comments can directly contribute to upping our blogs’ rank on search engines. More often than not, everyone discussing in the comments section will end up using the keywords for that particular post.

Since we’ll be engaging in actual conversation, it won’t be seen as spam. Commenters will be unintentionally helping in increasing our ranks, and they’ll be happy to do so!

So when we write or read articles, we should take the time to say something sensible in the comments section. Posts get better, pages get more views, and readers get happier. Everybody wins.

  9. i think commenting is a very good practice especially from a learning point of view but the problem is spam. There are lot of people who only comment for back links. I don’t think that is bad but one need to maintain ethical level so that the host site’s integrity is not damaged. Comments which are not related doesn’t make any sense.

    • You are right akhil. Although commenting is a great way to drive traffic to your blog, it really sucks to spam the other sites with comments. One should make sure that the comment has atleast something useful in it which is worth being read.

  10. Interesting – I always try to replying to comments, not only is it fun and inspiring to engage with your readers but it’s also great for back links! ;)

  11. Nice post Kyle. I think, commenting on blog posts my get your website plenty of traffic, as well as backlinks. I say commenting is mandatory for new bloggers.

  12. Obviously, commenting is very important to bloggers either you are the one to do it or the other way around. You need to interact and make sure others will notice that you are existing might as well your site is so commenting is one way to tell the whole web that a blog like yours needing some attention to, which means, you are also marketing something that is worth reading for everyone. A blog or site that is not noticeable is like a non-existing blog so better to tell the whole web that they should notice you because you are important too.

  13. Blog Commenting is a necessary activity to get a backlink most of people always leave comment on others blog due to one reason while we comment on anothers blog than comment convert as a link so its a big reason to blog commenting.

  28. Regarding the first point, feedback could never always be in agreement with the article or may present a different perspective to it. Commenting is the best way, I think, to get to what your readers are thinking thus sparking conversation.

  29. Nice list, one of the main reasons to comment I think is also to build relationships with other bloggers. It’s very hard as a blogger to be successful without the help from other bloggers. Commenting is the starting point to reaching out to other bloggers. Down the track you might offer guest posts or you might co-author content or they might mention you in their own posts all of which is great but usually you need a starting point and commenting is a good place to start.

  45. “If we forget something important in our article, we can just mention it in our own comments section, too!”

Kyle, that’s the one for me. It speaks to my difficulty with ever feeling a post is finished. I’m a new blogger with correspondingly low traffic and thus don’t get a ton of comments.

But eventually having more comments to respond to would allow me to toss around ideas that may have escaped my original posts.

    Thanks for this post.

  47. I think the better your blog posts, the better your blog comments. There will always be people trying to build up their own presence through comments. If you want a good discussion, post about something discussion worthy. If you post just to keep up the blog schedule and then expect good comments, you’re gonna have a bad time.

The key, of course, lies in the quality of the comments that you leave behind. No matter how posts you leave a comment, if you don’t share anything useful to the readers of the blog post, you’re pretty much just wasting your time and effort.

You also benefit by commenting on blogs by evaluating how people respond to the views expressed in your comments and if your comment generates a big response and debate you can then use the same ideas in your own blog. Oh and ofcourse getting backlinks from comments doesn’t hurt.

Very useful tips described by you in this article. One or many comments because it is requirement for both sites. For increasing the traffic of the site and for page ranking by the search engine it is mandatory.
Back linking is the main criteria behind this. But the comments to be in order and meaning full I can say.

  55. My blog highly depends on referral traffic where I commented on other blogs within my niche and that is why I drop a comment on those blogs. Since the site is still new, it is hard to rank well on search engine and as a result, I find it important to comment and get early traffic.

As for blog commenting, I will be writing a few post soon enough from blog.

        Keep in touch.
