As we all know, Twitter is one of the best social networking tools for bloggers. So any blogger who is not leveraging the power of Twitter is really taking the long road. I’m assuming you know enough about Twitter already, but if you don’t, you can read What is Twitter and How Important Twitter is to your business?
Now let’s assume you have a few followers already and talk about why your Twitter followers are making use of the “Unfollow button.”
Have you ever woke up, and found out that your Twitter follower number was decreasing?
If you are not making good use of your twitter account, people will have good reason to unfollow you.
Here are some things you can do to keep you from loosing more followers:
1) Stop posting like a robot
So many blogger make use of Twitter in a wrong way. It’s one of the best tools for bloggers, YES – but only if use the right way.
Sometimes I visit a blog and follow the blogger on Twitter, but quickly made use of the unfollow button due to what I see. This blogger had a habit of posting things like: ”Make $2000 within 2days” OR “How I make $5000 by just filling out a form online”…
Be real and stop posting what you know is not possible.
2) Don’t be a link monger
Posting your new blog post to Twitter has a log of advantages, only if you do it the right way. I unfollowed a pro blogger last week due to the fact that he posted links to his blog every minute of the day. I was unable to see other people’s important posts, due to the fact that every minute the screen was filled with his links. Many followers hate this – so stop it!
3) Be friendly with your followers
Your followers will make use of the unfollow button if they feel that you don’t care about them. To them, all you seem to care about is posting your own stuff. Each time you tweet a post, people will surely reply your tweet, to ask a question or talk about your tweet, if you keep ignoring them, they will grow tired of being your follower.
4) Have time for your followers
This is one of the most common mistakes many bloggers make. They only care about the people they are following. When you are less busy, take a moment to check what your followers are doing. Find what they’re tweeting and post a reply or re-tweet something they’ve posted. This will turn them to die hard fans of your blog.
5) You need to follow some of them
I’m not asking you to follow all of your followers, but some may actually be worth following back.
6) Not always about blogging or product
Every time you talk to your followers doesn’t have to always be about your blog post or a product. You don’t always have to tweet about important things – take the time to be funny, be a little naughty sometime, but not too naughty, as it may cause damage to your rep). Talk about what’s going on, outside Twitter and what’s currently going on in your life.
I’m going to put a stop here today. This should help you reverse the decreasing trend of your followers.

A few rules I like to follow with blogs and twitter are:
1. Post once or twice about your blog post and stop
2. If someone sends you an @mention, reply ASAP
3. Don’t @mention everyone on the planet, it gets annoying eventually
4. Post up trivial things every now and then, or funny quotes. If your followers laugh they will stay.

My pet hate with people that I follow on Twitter is when they don’t have time for their followers, so I’m glad that made your list. Sure, it doesn’t take much to ‘follow’ someone, but it’s still an effort on our behalf. That’s why I get so peeved when I see people tweeting at the person their following, only to be blatantly ignored time and time again. If you’re on twitter and JUST blasting out tweets without answering or responding to any, you’re kinda missing the ‘social’ part of the media experience.

Another issue is posts that are just too confusing. If all of your posts include numerous hashtags and @ mentions and a link it’s too cluttered. It also means that you aren’t telling why the link should be clicked on. Remove all of the excess from posts.

Social media is just that, social. Using a Twitter account as a means of giving out updates or random promotional offers is not enough anymore. People expect genuine interaction, even from major corporations, with their twitters. You have to engage your followers directly, make them feel like they are involved, and that you are investing into them. I think this is where I see most people lose their Twitter prowess.
Thanks Marie, that is some excellent advice about increasing our Twitter following. It is definitely important first and foremost to have a well optimized profile. We all click on profile and try to find out as much as possible from it.
Participating in conversations and providing that human interaction is also very important. Otherwise, it feels very robotic to the users and they lose interest in following.

Great points here! I’ve actually just finished cleaning up my Twitter account and weeded out a lot of those that I used to follow that just simply flooded my screen with one tweet after another. I was surprised on how much interesting links and conversations I’ve been missing out because of them.
All in all, I guess the best way to manage your tweets is to put yourself in the shoes of those are following you. Don’t do to them what you dislike and do more of what you do like.

One needs to understand the difference between a micro-blogging site (Twitter) and a social media sharing site (like Facebook or Google+) and the difference in engaging with users on these channels. The two things that make me unfollow are spammy tweets and tweeting to often. Hate it when my feed gets taken over by one person.
I totally agree with your points. So far Twitter has been a really great tool for me and it is a lot of fun as well. But I do see a lot of people that just send you messages with links to their website or blog and I guess some find this a bit annoying.

I’ve been really neglectful with my Twitter account over these last few years just because I don’t have as much fun with it as when I started but that’s not really a good way to think about it. Nowadays, I’m trying to keep my subscriber count small so it’s more of place for feedback vs. traffic source. Globalwalyy, I have unfollowed only a couple of Twitter people. Why? Waaaay too many tweets. I like to scan the feed and when it’s clogged with one person’s offerings, it becomes too much. I almost always follow back since people who follow me have such good taste! :)

I agree with you post here wholeheartedly. #2 and #6 are two of my pet peeves when it comes to twitter. I don’t usually have a lot of time to spend on twitter so when I see the same things being posted, over and over again, I tend to unfollow the person in question.
I’m not a fan of the auto-posting programs you can use with twitter. It tends to drive me a little nuts to see what I know is nothing more than a list of quotes that are rotated through. Sure some of them are good, but it does get aggravating after awhile.
I don’t mind people promoting their products and services, since I do it myself, but I do wish people wouldn’t use unrealistic numbers in their promotions. $5,000 in 5 minutes isn’t realistic unless you are a master marketer with a huge JV list.
