Your Advertising Choice Determines Your Earnings

What is meant with by that exactly.?

Well your choice of advertising type, shape, volume, and especially how you position them is very important in order to let your users see them, and not least click on them. This means that the more track you have on your ads the better your changes is for you to maximize your monthly earnings, therefore it’s extremely important that you have mastered this.

The thing that must determent your advertising choices, is the type of website you have, because one kind of advertising on a website are not necessarily as good on another.
So here are a few tips on how you design your ads to match your website or websites.

Making money with affiliate marketing and adsenseAdvertisement type.
The purpose of your website is as I see it the most crucial factor when it comes to advertising, especially when it comes the 2 types of advertising that is Adsense and affiliate.

If your website’s purpose is to get users to buy a product such as travel, unemployment insurance, clothing, etc., there is no doubt that affiliate advertising is the only way you can go with the website.

In fact, I would go as far to say that Adsense ads usually have nothing to do on such a website because it will just remove your earnings base due to the fact that Google targets the ads and are aiming for your users with those.

Thus making the Adsense ads a disruptive element, something that you don’t need too when it comes to making money.!

But is your website a blog, a service site where the user can get something, do something like websites with recipes, exchange rates, currency converter, stock quotes, bmi calculation, forums and all other types of websites where it’s conveyed a message and not a sale. Then it’s Adsense advertisements you should aim for and opposite with sales pages, affiliate advertising is here to be the disturbing element.

The design of advertisements

With affiliate ads there are not many options to customize the advertising because it’s the seller of the product, that are determining how they should look. The only thing you can have an effect on it the size, whether it be a picture or a flash movie. So they are more or less straightforward to use, but you can still get it wrong.!
You might wanna check out this post by Steven Papas “why your affiliate marketing campaign stinks you are making no money

Adsense advertising, however, is a type of advertising that is much harder to master because you, the webmaster have far more options for the design of how it should look like. Here you can even control the colors used, you have a few more sizes to choose from, whether it be only text ads, or whether it also may be images, flash or decidedly small films. This unfortunately also means that you have far more chance to getting it wrong, thus damaging your potential earnings on the website

My own experience with text ads says that the colors of the advertisements should match the website colors to have the best effect.

The colors on the title and link on the text ads should be the same as the headings and links on the website, the user will quickly see what the color of your headlines are and thus seeing their importance. This importance’s are you transferring into the ads, if the titles and links have the same color.

The little narrative text of the advertisement has the same color as the text on the website, maybe even a bit brighter to downplay this part.

You can setup Adsense ads to display text ads as well as Flash and other rich media advertising, this will allow you to have a greater chance to reach more users. And because your users are different just like me and you, you will with this diversity have a higher chance getting the right ad shown to the right user thereby getting a click on the ad you want

The position of the advertising
In this area there are as many opinions as there are websites, so again it’s from my own experiences that I’m writing about.!

You have full control over where to place your ads, but Google tend to give websites with too many ads above the content a lower position in search results. However this is only a problem with websites that have many ads “above the fold”

So imo if you only have one ad above the fold, you won’t get in trouble with Google…

There are in total 5 places on your website where you can place ads, and it has great significance which of the 5 positions you choose to use. The 5 places is above content to the right of the content to the left of the content, below the content itself and merged into the content.

The worst position you can make place an ad is at the bottom, unless you know the users read all the way down every time something they rarely are.

The best location you can give your advertising is which they are merged into the page’s content here, they will stand as a more natural part of the website especially when the colors are as previously described.

Then comes the right and left side and in fourth place the advertisement at the top, the low ranking on the ads at the top is that the users eyes are usually further down the page about the center of the screen so many of them don’t even see your ads here.

But what’s right for your website is ultimately something the users decide, so you can’t do anything other than tweak your ads until you find the best location, design and type for your users.

This article should hopefully give you little more to go on, so you should hit it right setup faster and start earning the money we all want.

Since the article is made on the basis of my own experience of around just 20 websites, it shouldn’t be seen as the only way but simply as a help.
And there is certainly also exceptions to the rule as there is with all other things.!

What are your experiences with making money online?

  6. Great article Jimmy! i totally agree with you . i read from an article that traffic is equal to money but now after modifying that formula we can say advertising is equal to traffic is equal to money.

    • Hi

If it only was that easy, that traffic equals money, then we would all earn a fortune. :)
You also need to say content, because without good content ppl wont click on the ads as often as they will if the content is good.
That is also due to bad content gives irrelevant ads, that the users don’t need.

  7. Hi Jimmy thanks for the exceptional post. In the first months of my site’s life, I had adsense ads almost everywhere. However, I would see a big number of visitors leaking to other websites through the adsense links and banners. They were destructing them from reading my reviews and clicking my affiliate links. I was loosing sales because many of the ads were actually my competitors and they were advertising the same products I was bloggin about! Since the majority of my visitors were targeted, ready-to-buy visitors and they would come directly to my product pages from google search results, I decided to totally remove adsense from my site. What’s the purpose of getting dimes and nickles from visitors who click on ads and go away, when I could easily make them click on my affiliate links and get me a nice commission from the sale.

    • I’m glad that it worked out for you.! :0)

Regarding you compititors and Adsense, you can block ads from them thereby not sending you users to them. But there is one somewhat small problem with blocking them, and that is that they will be blocked on all your websites and not only one site.

  8. Great article Jimmy! Unfortunately I have no experience with making money online yet! I expect a few sales soon! I totally agree with you though, that our advertising choices surely affect our earnings. Quite a few blogs, use very ”rough” advertising techniques, which are very repellent to the readers. I have a blog on my own for four months now, and recently I was thinking of Adsense advertising, but I have second thoughts.
You really helped me with your article, and I think I’ll try Adsense, but carefully!!

    Thank you for sharing!

  9. I think the position of the ads is more important than the others. although some visitors sometimes get impressed when they see nice animated ads.

    • Rich media ads are booth good and bad, if it’s a good ads it can move the user from your website before they have read it, but they also have a higher ctr.
So it’s balancing act to finde the ads your users will click, but not before they have read your blog or website.

But in general I can tell thanks for the article and for the tips as they are great and for sure deserve reading.

    • I don’t think you have to wait a hole year before applying for Google Adsense, but give it 6 months so that Google can see that you are serious with the site and it has daily visitors.
In the end it’s all about good content, without it you get anywhere. :o)

  14. Absolutely right. When I starts my own website then I used to place advertisement code any where in my site and my earning is very much low. But now it is not so ,I organized my advertisement code properly and more earning for me.

  15. The ads that seem to have the best conversion rate are the ones that repeat what the visitor initially searched for.
Something I find very difficult is to find affiliate products and ads that work for target groups that are between 15-18 years old. This group often doesn’t have a lot of money and are usually just looking for free information.

    • Hi

I can imagine that it’s hard to find that kind of affiliate ads, I wouldn’t even try but stick to Google adsense ads.
Thus letting them target the ads thereby do all the work for you. ;)

  16. Very complete and interesting article. I really liked that you speak from your own experience, therefore your tips carry more weight. I usually like to use text-based ads but I think that every blogger should experiment to find out what position or color that works best for him.

    • Hey

At first I also aimed for text ads, because they didn’t take to much of the users attentions when surfing on my sites.
But after talking with a few other guys that has all has a “couple” of websites, I started thinking that it might be worth to try and see if media ads could give me a higher CTR and earnings.
So in the end I turned on media ads on all my sites, thereby showing both text and media ads. A few of the sites had a drop in clicks on the ads, but the rest got a higher CTR and as a bonus I earned more on each click.

So I absolutely agree that every blogger should experiment with the ads.!

  18. this is very true about ads being in certain positions on the webpage. For example, if we have a 728 x 90 leaderboard in the top fold section of your blog or website, and the 300 x 250 in either the first paragraph of your content, or in the sidebar of your website, chances are, you’ll most likely earn a pretty penny from those ads eating in good positions such as those.

  19. I think it depends on the person making promotions and advertisements. Business strategies are meant to make or break the company. It’s only a matter of making the right choice and taking the right actions.

    • That it is, but finding the right action to take can be a difficult thing to find. Even though I have 20 sites I still at times are having a hard time finding the right colors, ad form, for the users.

  20. Placement of advertising banners matters a lot for both the advertisers and site owner. Nice post.
