Pros and Cons of Google+ and Facebook

thumbs up, thumbs downGoogle is the internet’s most visited website which has the world’s information easily accessible. Google+ is a social network of Google and is available as a website and on mobile devices. Facebook is the biggest social networking website that connects people and businesses around the world. This article weighs each of these and brings out the pros and cons of the two.

Google+ having an user count of 90 million competes with its biggest rivals – Facebook and Twitter. The Google+1 button helps you to share and find what your friends have shared. Google+ Pages, is similar to Facebook pages. It allows businesses to connect with fans. These businesses will receive corporate accounts to start sharing information about themselves and invite others to join in on the conversation.

Google+ has made a recent entry into the social media category and hence let us find out how well it has been received and accepted by discussing the pros and cons.

Pros of Google+

Google+ is not Facebook: Google+ insists on users giving their real name to identify themselves instead of any first and last name in Facebook. Another feature which makes a difference is Privacy Settings. Unless you have customized your privacy in Facebook, all your information is visible publicly. On Google+ you can update the required information and leave the rest. You will not be prompted to give all the information and reveal them.

Circles: Google+’s friend list feature called Circles has received an applause from the users. This feature scores more than the friend list on Facebook or Twitter. People can find Friends, Family, Acquaintances and Following as the options for Circle. Users can use the drag and drop to add friends and contacts into different circles. There is no a default list of friends-everybody goes into a circle. Sharing is very easy and a true advantage in a circle. Users can share content with everyone or with circles or with specific circles or people. When users share in Google+ it will be visible to the intended circles or people and not to anybody. The “Following circle” is a great way to keep up with your favorite celebrities.

Instant Photo Upload: This feature is specific to Android mobile devices. The mobile app is faster and users can upload photos and videos real quick. The video and photos are automatically uploaded and stored in user’s account in a private album for sharing later.

Hangouts: This feature that lets you chat with as many as 10 people simultaneously with a camera installed. Hangouts is useful for businesses in which you can chat with customers individually or as a group especially in remote locations. They will also be able to share documents and spreadsheets while hanging out. However, anyone on the web could potentially join the “Hangout” if they have the unique URL of the Hangout.

Sparks: Use sparks to grab news stories, blog posts, and articles from around the Internet on subjects you’re interested in.

Cons of Google+

  • Google+ as a social networking site has received a much lesser interest from people. They still prefer Facebook and can’t leave it easily.
  • Google+ pushes posts with new comments back to the top of the timeline so you can catch up on new comments. This drawback has been reported annoying by almost every Google+ user.
  • Google+ offers limited customization compared to Facebook which allows users to customize using third party applications.
  • Google+ doesn’t offer tie-in offer like LinkedIn in which you can tie other accounts like Twitter to your profile. The workaround for this would be adding links in your Google profile.

Pros of Facebook

Social networking for individuals: Facebook is an excellent platform to interact and connect with people. People who wish to be on Facebook can become a member and set up a profile. Once a profile has been created, you can send a friend request to your school mates, co-workers, relatives, old friends and add them to a Friends list. You can maintain your profile by adding status, photos, video and share them with friends and can get to know their friends updates via News Feed.

Facebook users can interact with Messages which similar to a mail system or can use Facebook Chat/Video to chat with their friends online. One of the recent feature added is the Timeline which has replaced the Facebook Profile. Facebook Timeline is the new profile page for it users. When you add a timeline, you tell your life story by way of photos, friends, milestones achieved, traveling etc. People can make use of the Events application to create an event for birthday, wedding, parties etc and invite friends for a social gathering. Groups application allows people to create and join groups they are interested in. Comments, likes, games, birthday calendar- Facebook has the required things for individuals.

Facebook for businesses: Facebooks caters to the needs of the business community. Companies offering products and services can create a page and promote them.

Businesses can advertise using Facebook Ads, add a fan page, invite business contacts and customers to support them. As the user base is huge, businesses can make good use of Facebook to enhance their sales and business opportunities.

Cons of Facebook

  • Facebook causes a kind of addiction when over used.
  • Many people think that the Newsfeed is annoying because you get updates about every single activity from your friends on Facebook and in turn are updated about yours.
  • You may know many people on Facebook but it isn’t necessary to add each and everybody you know on the Friends list. Unless you adjust the privacy settings, your photos, video, status will be public. Anybody can view these, share, add comments(not required) and like them.
  • Facebook gives a lot of apps like horoscope, greeting cards which prompt you to give out all your profile details.
  • Companies intending to use Facebook as a media for their business growth need to have an extraordinary page, events and group that creates an interest to the customers and business contacts.
  • For businesses, you will able to gauge the traffic to your page/fan page but it is difficult to find out how many have contributed to a sale. The pages as well as applications need to be monitored for positive and negative feedback because bad comments can spoil the image of the company and its products.

Hopefully this post will help you sort through which of these sites will meet your needs best.  You may have a different perspective about the pros and cons – please share them in the comments section.

  1. This is interesting. Though Google did try its best to get over the disadvantages of Facebook; it somehow didn’t bring in the craze that Facebook bought in. Maybe Google + has to work on integrating more applications and all. Maybe tap into the younger audience too. Integrate more application and work on the addictive factor somehow! :)

  2. Google+ and facebook Both are excellent But I prefer to use them for different purposes. I use google+ for business purpose and Facebook for personal purpose.:) nice post by the way.

  3. Yes there are pros and cons both are present on facebook and twitter….and addiction of facebook but the interaction with people……nice article thanks for sahring it……

  4. Thanks for stopping by Puneet…

  5. Hello! I like today’s article. You wrote a nice comparison. It shows the fight of two giants of the Internet.

  6. Caroline

I love both facebook and google plus, but you stated some very good cons of both here

    • Hi Kenny thanks for your comment everyone knows about positive side of these social networking sites but I just wanted to share both plus and minus side of google+ and facebook hope you have enjoyed it….

  7. Cathy Presland says:

I like that “facebook causes a kind of addiction” – so funny!

The other big pro of Google + is the move towards contextual search results – the more circles you’re in and the more people share your stuff then the more you might show up in their searches….

  8. Thanks for sharing this post. I think Google+ should be a powerful Social media network along with Facebook In future.

  9. Even though I was a critic of Twitter I now find it easier and better than most other social networking. I still use Facebook though but Google+ gets about 5 minutes of my time per month if it’s lucky. If more people I know were looking to engage with me on G+ then I would give it more time but out of 6000 followers on twitter and a few hundred on Facebook I am connected to about 10 people on G+, it doesn’t take a genius to work out the reasons why I don’t want to invest much time in G+.

    • Come on Matt,

You circled 13 people on Google Plus. I see this all the time “Nobody is on Plus” mantra and then I look at their profile and they have only followed 10 people.

Try that on Twitter. Start an account, follow 10 people, no lists, no searches… see how long you like it!

It also doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if you aren’t social it won’t be any fun…. I too have over 7k followers on Twitter, about 700 friends on FB, but my time is spent on Plus, the people there are better informed, educated, and I won’t even mention the search benefits (it might take a genius to figure it out).

      • Good points BUT I just find it easier to find and connect with the people I want to connect with on Twitter and Facebook. Maybe it’s just the way I like to do things doesn’t fit with G+?

Don’t forget that there is a reason why I have only circled 13 people on G+ and the evidence suggests I am not in the minority.

        • You said yourself that you used to be a critic of Twitter, now it is easier for you. I just don’t think people are giving Google a chance is all. And what is the reason for only circling 13 people?

          • The reason I was a critic of Twitter is that I didn’t understand what Twitter was about but now I understand it and why it is totally unique I love it. I understand what Google+ is about but I don’t think it is unique enough.

The 2 main reasons I have only circled so few people are:
            1) The reason I pointed out above that I find it easier on Facebook and Twitter to find and connect with the people I want to connect with.
            2) The biggest reason is that on Facebook and Twitter a lot of people find me as well as I am finding them. So far on G+ it has felt 1 sided, nearly everyone I have connected with I have found or sought, nobody is looking for me. For every person I seek to connect with on Twitter another 3 random unrelated people seek me out so it is a nice 2 way street of connections and communication. This combines to make G+ feel like hard work and unrewarding which I don’t get from Facebook or Twitter, from day1 both of these services has made me feel included and the connections easy and fun. Google+ just isn’t giving me that which is why I am reluctant to give it more time.

The latest statistics reveal that the average Google+ user is using the service for just 3 minutes for the whole month whereas Facebook users are using Facebook for 405 minutes on average per month and Twitter is 21 minutes. This backs up my theory that many people feel the same about G+ as I do.

        • I hope you aren’t quoting the Com Score findings that are false, are you? Did you actually read that report? Do you understand where the findings come from?

Here is one guys analysis of it, and there are many more:

          (Yup, on Google Plus even!)

After you read that go look at what people like Brogan ( is doing with it, there is probably a large community of writers to network with, and so much more…

Honestly, you never gave it a chance, and I am not trying to pick a fight here, I just think it’s utterly H I L A R I O U S when people say no one is on Google and their accounts look EXACTLY like yours. In 3 years on Twitter, I have gained 7k followers, in 6mos on Plus, I have 3k. You do the math…..

          • I take your points on board but I think your success with G+ is possibly because your audience and your peers in your sector are one of the groups that has embraced G+. You have to understand that this doesn’t apply to every sector so your success with it won’t always translate or crossover to other people and sectors who are trying to connect with groups of people who are simply not using Google+.

You are obviously a big fan of Google+ and you’re having great success with it and I am happy for you but my personal opinion is that certain demographics (like yours) have embraced it and others have tried it and not really used it.

Please also understand that I am running 4 different companies and a vineyard and balancing all if it with being a father and husband. I have to carefully consider which areas get my time and I agree with you that if I give more time to my G+ profile I could get a lot more out of it but at the moment my personal feelings are that my time would be better spent concentrating on other things.

        • Points well taken Matt,

Thanks for the honest and frank discussion, sorry Kiesha for taking over your comments ;-)

          • It’s always good to hear other people’s opinion, it helps me to question and consider decisions I have made. I’m always happy to have a decent discussion :-)

  10. Eventhough Google+ has some unique features like hangouts, number of users registered on Google+ increasing but could not compete with the FaceBook. FaceBook has large number of registered user and probably most of them use daily to update the news

  11. In my opinion, Facebook is a little bit more complicated than Google+, and not everyone can enjoy all its benefits

  12. Personally i think that facebook is a much better platform fro any sort of promotion, google + is not very user friendly..

  13. Great comparison. Google is much more business friendly and I don’t think as intrusive but Facebook is more enjoyable. I do agree with the author in that the news feed on Facebook is extremely annoying.

  14. I am starting to put less and less importance in social media. However, everybody seems to be there.

  15. I think Google+1 Facebook and Twitter is a excellent way to advertise your business. Everyone is using these key social platforms. Why not hop on the same train :)

  16. I have an account on both yet I find myself spending more time establishing myself on Facebook than Google+. It may not be a bad place but I have just not had the time to really pursue it.

  17. Well I also hate the Facebook privacy stuff: I would never give access to my private info to any kind of programs which might gather/use/publish information – I don’t want this to happen

However, you can not say that getting facebook addiction is a con of Facebook itself – it is a con of yourself I guess :).

  18. abhishek says:

thnx for the post .. i think facebook is better than Google plus except its privacy feature ..

  19. Both Google+ and Facebook can be very helpful in promoting your business, you just need to use it in a proper way. That way you can maximize their uses and will not be banned in using these social medias.

  20. Social media is very important for advertising. Every social media has advantages and disadvantages. No doubt Google+ is great platform for making connection with people, interacting with different people and for advertising business. But Google+ is less popular than Facebook. An I prefer to use Facebook.

  21. I’m new to Google+ and finding it rather impersonal compared with Facebook — there seems to be far less interaction. That’s OK, though, because I plan to use Google+ for brand-building, while Facebook is more for keeping up with family, friends and people I share interests with.

    • Your idea also seems to be a good one. If we are able to categorize the social networks according to our requirement we”ll be reaching to the right audience

  22. I really liked the way you compered Google+ and Facebook, very gentle but targeted! Nothing about Facebook surprised me, on the other hand I learned a lot about Google+. Both are great, and in my opinion for made for different purposes. Google+ is very professional and mainly for business communication. On the contrary Facebook is more for personal contacts or ”light” company pages/forums.
    Thank you for sharing.

    • Hi Sara I very much delighted at the way you have appreciated my post. I think everyone knows about facebook very well so there is not much info to surprise you but google+ is new to us, so everyone is eager to know about it… thanks for stopping by….

  23. Your Pros and Cons analysis for Facebook and Google+ is very clear and justice. Thanks for the excellent comparison. Also I agree with Puneet that we can use them for different purpose.

  24. I think facebook is a lot of better to communicate for my friends they don’t use google plus but the google has one strenght it is linked with gmail and in the future it can be better way to communicate and be social.

  25. either way you look at all social networks, we need to Google +, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and the social bookmarking services in order to help us stay relevant, in search engine results pages. it’s predicted that Google plus will give Facebook a run for its money very very soon. Food for thought…

  26. I believe Facebook is definitely better than Google pus. The main reason for this is because the both side connection that we have in Facebook is not there in Google plus.

  27. Though Google did try its best to get over the disadvantages of Facebook but it just didn’t payoff. Google plus has become a ‘virtual ghost’.

  28. I must say that I haven’t really caught on to google plus yet. It seems that facebook has such a dominance that I’m not sure google will ever catch up! But I know better than to talk smack about google. Google might just show me up! I probably go on g+ a few times a month. When I go on it just seems very boring because people just aren’t posting on it.

  29. Yes, you are right people still prefer Facebook but i think Google will never leave any stone unturned for making Google+ popular. Anyway interesting pros and cons.

  30. good post, those are some great pro and cons to google+ n facebook. Facebook will always be a better growing social network that will be more beneficial to new businesses and individual entities since its more popular and more known.

  31. This is a great comparison between facebook and google+ both have their own strengths and weaknesses. And they are great for helping your brand gain more exposure.

  32. I would highly recommend Adwords. I’m a certified Adwords Professional and if you’re targeting long tail keywords like ps3 game controllers, wii game accessories, xbox game accessories etc., the price would be pretty cheap (around $0.05 to $0.20 per click).
You can also specify the demographics for a more targeted reach.

  33. Thanks for your explaining post on pros and cons of G+ and FB, in my option, most of blogers/webmaster love G+ because this social network can help them improving ranking for their blog. I love G+ because I can see a gif picture, it’s very nice :)

  34. I prefer facebook to get sales and traffic. But don’t forget to post any promotion or special offers. Facebook Page now looks professional and easy to use. Google+ needs to some improvement.

  35. Sujith M says:

Google+ makes me think compared to facebook which I believe is a good platform to share your photos, videos and mostly personal stuff. If someone is into blogging, content writing and networking in your favourite subjects, then I would recommend Google+.

  36. There is little time left when Google + will take over the Facebook social network too. But this is not so easy because Facebook is introducing new features day by day as Google+ is updating there,

  37. One of the biggest pros to being on google+ is connecting your blog with your G+ profile so your name and image appear on your blog post search results as rich content. But one of the bigger downfalls with G+ is the audience being relatively tech-savvy and very aware of ads. It’s almost like the polar opposite of Pinterest users. The best part of Facebook is obviously the gigantic audience and very specific demographic targeting. On the other hand, the downfall is high ad cost. There’s always a give and take with whatever social network you side with but it’s all about constant testing to get the best returns.
