3 Better Ways to Research Keywords

Print Friendly

how to find keywordsKeyword research is probably not the first thing you do when writing posts. To be honest, I don’t either – I write depending on inspiration and I don’t take the time to make my content keyword rich.

But when I look back at my Analytics data and see how successful past posts are, I always want to update the content a bit and make it get even more traffic.

So if you’re fed up with the Keyword Tool or simply don’t trust it that much, here are a few tricks and trips I’d like to use to get more keyword data:

1. Google Suggest is a nifty tool not just for finishing the search terms you are entering. It also serves a list of related keywords that have been search before by people like you. To me, it serves as an inspiration for developing my content further. For example, when searching “keyword research tools” I will find some other potential keywords such as “keyword research tools for seo” or “keyword research tools review”. Try playing with different sets of keywords and synonyms to get a wide array of potential keywords.

2. Related searches are yet another tool in Google’s arsenal that delivers some nice insights. To get some related keywords, simply go to Google, search your main keyword and see the bottom of the page for some of Google’s suggestions. Taking the same example, a search for “keyword research tools” gives me some interesting options “keyword research tips”, “powerful keyword research tools” or “keyword spy tools”.

3. Analytics data is one of those things that keep on giving even after you thought you discovered all it had to offer. What I do when I need to optimize a given page is I go to Analytics, find the page in the Content section than check the entrance keywords. This will show me all the keywords visitors have used to find my post and check the ones with little traffic and/or higher bounce rate. Those last will be the keywords I need to improve on to get higher rankings.

Now it’s your turn. What are some good ways to research keywords apart from Google’s Keyword Tool?

This is a helpful list of learning resources on Keyword Research, Bogdan. You are clear, brief, and open-minded about continually improving and sharing what you learn.

    Thanks

  2. Another nifty way of doing keyword research is to search for the base keyword in different popular article directories or big sites. For instance searching ezinearticles.com or buzzle for a particular keyword, would give a lot of related keywords that are present in their site.

I use all these tools when I do my keyword search. Another thing I do is, when you type in a keyword into Google’s search box, just below it, it tell you how many people have search for that keyword. The bigger the number, the more people have search using that keyword.
