Surviving the Blog Reality Blog Contest: Out Rank; Out Shine

Can you Survive the Blog?

That very first day when I logged into my cpanel and installed WordPress, I had no idea what kinds of struggles lay ahead of me.

I isolated myself so that I could devote my full attention to writing and getting my content out there.  As I transported my mind to some deserted island, only periodically did I notice the laughter of my children as they played outside while I hacked away at the keyboard.

Days would pass this way, yet at each day’s end it felt as if I was only scratching the surface.

Before I knew it, I was operating in survival mode, only leaving the computer to eat, sleep and you know what…  All extra-curricular activities had ceased.  No watching TV, no talking to friends on the phone, no hanging out, no wasting precious moments at the amusement park or the zoo…  Nada!

I locked myself away, determined to survive this blogging thing.  I was determined to not only survive but to thrive on this lonely island.

I experienced some great successes fairly quickly, but I also realized that there were more efficient ways I could’ve been doing things.

One day, while out, exploring and gathering materials, I stumbled upon other islanders who were willing to help.  I discovered that I was not alone!

Slowly, I began building an alliance with bloggers like Tia, Evelyn, Linda, Rebecca, Brankica, Hajra, Jane and Melanie.  We combined our efforts to help each other and were able to accomplish so much more as a team.

I’d watched the reality show, I knew how powerful alliances could be – yet, so many of us bloggers fail to tap into that power.  As a team, we were able to multiply our promotional and content producing efforts, it made building a blog less stressful – and less lonely!

I realized that blogging was not a deserted island after all – it’s full of amazing people who are willing to let you stand on their shoulders so that you can reach the next level in hopes that you will reach down and pull them up once you get there.  That’s been my experience!

So to celebrate blogging alliances everywhere, I decided to host, the first of its kind: an exciting reality-based competition called “Surviving the Blog.”

This contest will be like no other in the blogosphere.  I will recruit two teams of 5 bloggers.  Each team will be confronted with the difficult task of building a successful blog together.  They will receive training and will face many blogging challenges together.

This contest will run for about 10 weeks. At the end of each week, one team will outrank the other and the losing team will have to vote off one of their precious team mates, reducing their team’s effectiveness and reach.

By the end of the “Surviving the Blog” competition only one successful blogger will remain.

One blogger will take home the Grand Prize:  winning blog and some amazing prizes, including cash!  A runner-up will get the remaining blog and some prizes – additional prizes may also be given throughout the contest for winning various challenges.  Check out the latest update:  Prizes & What to Expect.

Many will enter this contest, but only 10 will be selected for the teams.

So, how do you get in on this amazing contest?

Starting September 5, 2011, I will begin accepting entries for potential contestants.  The deadline for entries will be September 23rd, 11:59 p.m. EST.   Selections will be announced on October 3rd, and the official Surviving The Blog contest will begin on Monday, October 10th.

If you’d like a chance to be considered for one of the 2 teams, here are the guidelines:

1.  Write a “Why WeBlogBetter Should Choose Me” blog post for your blog that announces this contest, your intent to enter, and reasons why we should choose you over others.  Be sure to include ALL sponsors banners and links.  (See code below).  This sponsor list will continue to grow and it’s your responsibility to make sure you have the latest updates.

Note:  Owning a blog is not a requirement for entry, however, to enter, you’ll still need to write the required blog post – you can do that by guest posting on another blog or by starting a free one at WordPress.com, Blogger, Google Sites, or even on Squidoo.

2.  Tweet this post on Twitter at least 7 times spaced out no less than an hour apart. Be sure to mention @WeBlogBetter so that I can verify that you’ve done this.

3.  Share this post on various social networking sites.

4.  Subscribe to the WBB Email List, if you haven’t already

5.  Follow these WBB Team Member blogs:  PositiveSpin, LiveYourLove, HajraKveches!, SoloMomPreneur, FindAllAnswers.com

6.  Send an Email to: SurvivingtheBlog@WeBlogBetter.com with the subject: “Intent to Enter” that includes the following required pieces:

  • Link to your “Why WeBlogBetter should Choose Me” blog post
  • The Twitter ID that you used to tweet this post
  • Evidence that you’ve shared this post on other social networks (screenshots, links, your profile, etc.)
  • The email you used to subscribe to the WBB Email List.
  • A Short bio of yourself that includes details that will make you stand out from the crowd.
  • A 250×250 or bigger photo of yourself (Must be appropriate and Safe For Work).

Are you brave enough to rise to the challenge?

Don’t want to be a contestant, but still want to participate?

Remember, since all potential contestants will be required to link to ALL sponsors, this is an awesome to gain lots of backlinks and strengthen your SEO.

So, if you’d like to sponsor this amazing contest, right now we are accepting sponsorship at the following levels:

$50 Basic  Level - Get a link with the anchor text of your choice included – Lowest Placement

$100 – Silver Level - Get a 125×125 banner w/Link – Bottom Placement

$150 – Gold Level - Get a large 300×250 banner w/Link – Middle placement

Comments

  1. What a creative idea! This will be an all out blast to watch (and learn from).

  2. The contest seems interesting… though I’m not sure if it transcends a region specificity. Hope you’ll let me know if a blogger from India can be a part of this contest.

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Arvind,
As long as you’re able to maintain internet access so that you can communicate with the other bloggers, you should be okay. The only other issue is if you win, you want to be able to receive your payment – so you’ll need to have a Paypal account or some other way to receive your winnings.

    • Errm.. Why should a blogger from India not be allowed?
Sounds a pretty scarey thing to say imo.
Thanks Kiesha for the well written interesting post.
      Steve :)

    • Hi Arvind, nothing of that sort here! I am actively blogging from India. Agree with Kiesha, if you have good connection and willingness to communicate at slightly-odd hours, we can get a lot done.

  3. Harleena Singh says:

    Hi Kiesha,

This is surely going to turn out to be one of its kind!

Wishing you all the very best !

  4. This is an amazing idea. I’m looking forward to reading your (and the participants) blog about this contest. It almost feels like a television show. xD

    • I was thinking the same thing Alice, wouldn’t it be cool if Kiesha was able to somehow put it on video? At least the highlights.

      • Kiesha Easley says:

        Hi Brian,
Updates via audio and video are all in the plans, but we’ll have to see how it all goes. Because of the unpredictable nature of this contest, it’s very difficult to plan everything out ahead of time.. I’m going to see how it all pans out. I expect it to be very intriguing! :)

        • … and all of your team members will be supporting you and cheering you on for the whole exhilarating journey, Kiesha! :)
This contest is a game changer and a trend setter, for sure!

  5. Okay Kiesha, this contest is going to be fantastic. It’s a huge undertaking and you deserve a lot of credit just for being willing to put in the effort, not to mention coming up with the idea. It sounds very fun and interesting to everyone watching, not just the contestants. That’s what makes this contest different than the rest I think.

  6. Jeah, this sounds really like a reality show :))

  7. Holly Jahangiri says:

LOL – I misread this at first as “That very first day when I logged in I got carpal tunnel…” but probably wasn’t that far off, was I?
This is the first new, unique, cool blogging contest concept I’ve seen in a while! I am going to enjoy following the entrants as they compete (I thought about entering, myself, but decided I’d much rather enjoy this one from the sidelines while I work on revamping my own blog). Best of luck to all!

    • Oh, darn, Holly! I was secretly wishing and praying you’d be one of the contestants!
Give it some more thought, okay?
To heck with the sidelines! You’re a killer blogger!

      • Holly Jahangiri says:

If you ever do a “Blogosphere’s Got Talent,” I wanna be Simon Cowell, okay?
Seriously, I wish I had the time and energy to give this a go, just for the sheer FUN of it – it looks like an incredible contest, and I’d love to be a part of it, but I just — well, I’ve already voted myself off the island. :)

    • Lol! Maybe you could join in… for old times sake! ;)

      • Holly Jahangiri says:

I’d rather heckle from the sidelines on this one. :)
I’ll bring the balut. There IS going to be a “world’s scariest foods challenge,” right? I mean, what’s a “Survivor” type contest without THAT?

  8. This is a great chance for those who want to show their blogging abilities Thanks for the chance to take part in it. As for me I would like to participate but fact I am very busy at the moment to create anything new.

  9. Wow Kiesha. Like Holly I got the wrong impression when I saw your post on G+. Anyway, this is an amazing idea and I can just but imagine how it will be difficult to manage this contest. The one thing I know for sure is that if there is anyone who can pull this off, it would be you. Thinking whether I participate or stay on the sideline as a sponsor… Anyway, regardless, good luck and I will certainly help you spread the word out.

  10. It seems this contest is impressive. Those ideas and thoughts are very helpful. This may be a good experience in getting involve in these activity.

  11. Wow Kiesha,
When you said a few weeks back you had something up your sleep….you were serious! Awesome…awesome idea.
    Brandon

  12. An awesome contest and an awesome opportunity to definitely show your blogging talents.
You’ve raised the bar with this contest!
Now, to see if I can clear my schedule and make some time for this!

  13. Okay in here someone say this sounds cool or like a reality show. But i want to say this is great victory. They prove their abilities that they can. I really like this.

  14. Hey Kiesha,
Finally! So excited about this! The first Blogging Reality Contest! Will be loads of fun! Spreading the word around! :)

  15. This is probably the best idea i’ve seen for a very long time. It seems like the Apprentice TV show. I can’t wait for it to start.

  16. Nice Contest..But am afraid to participate this contest …IT hard for me…..

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Sibin,
It looks like you’re already blogging – I encourage you to enter anyway. At least give it try to leave yourself with no regrets. If you DON’T enter, it’s certain you won’t win, but if you enter, at least you’ll have a chance. I like having a chance better than an absolute negative. Does that make sense?

  17. Kiesha, every time I visit your blog, I realize what a talent you are. This is beautiful. The word awesome is so played out, I have to use “beautiful”.
The majestic sweep of your creative paintbrush touches all who venture within its radius. I want to participate simply to bask in the glow of this idea. (And you know what, I don’t have much time. But, heck, I’m a do it anyway. LOL)
    Stay tuned, sister!
    Cheers,
    Mitch

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Mitchell!
Thank you! I’m so happy you like this idea- it just hit me one day and I just had to take action. I’d be ecstatic to have you enter this contest! All the best to you! :)

  18. Very interesting idea on the contest. Sounds really awesome. I have to think about joining this one. But I start grad school in 3 days and I started up a new blog, Have to look at some of my schedule.
Gotta Mark Sept 20th on my calendar (3 days before deadline) just in case.

  19. This is one of the fantastic article. and, its really a interesting task on here :) Thanks a lot for sharing your post on here :)

  20. First off this contest is genius. I would like to apply for the contest but it is intimidating. I have a blog but it is not as polished as many others. Do you expect contestants to be working full time on the contest?

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Dan!
Don’t let this contest intimidate you. Working with five other bloggers shouldn’t require more than a few hours of work on the blog each day. I encourage you to enter anyway, at least give yourself a chance. It will be fun!

  21. Very cool, Kiesha. I love your idea. I’m a big Survivor fan and I’m fascinated to be a fan of your contest.

When you say that one team will outrank the other, how are the rankings determined? Will readers get to vote? How are teams chosen? This fascinates me.

I applaud those who enter this great competition. It will be a competition where everyone is a winner: authors and readers.

  22. Hi Kiesha,

This is such an amazing platform for a contest. I am a little intimidated because of the time that would be involved. However, I will think about entering if you do this later.

You are a real ‘shaker and mover’. I fall into the arena that you talked about at the beginning of this post. I have a hard time doing anything except working on my writing. Such a unique and wonderful idea! Sally

  23. I saw Ileane’s post about this and what a great and unique idea. I wlll have to see how my upcoming schedule is going to play out to do this, but it sounds like fun.

  24. I have seen such a blog contest for the first time and I liked the idea very much. It would be better if you start a nomination system for choosing the contestants so that even the community can participate in choosing the right candidates. Good Luck.

  25. Best of luck everyone. This is by far the most original blogging contest I have seen.

  26. Challenge Accepted!

  27. Well, I don’t think I have what it takes to become a part of this awesome contest, but I guarantee that I will be telling everyone I can find about it.

This is way beyond any other blog contest I’ve seen so far. Awesome idea!!!

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Christine,
Please don’t count yourself out – I’m looking for bloggers at all levels. Don’t leave yourself with something to regret! I hope you change your mind and encourage you to enter. :)

  28. So I heard about this contest from Ana and it sounds like an interesting journey indeed! It will be fun to see how everything turns out. Perhaps this may become the information age reality blogging show one day… :-)

    Best to everyone!
    Ron

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Ron,
Thanks for following Ana’s lead (she is awesome, isn’t she?). I certainly hope that this contest will be remembered in the blogging community as a game changer, as much as the Survivor TV changed the reality/game show genre. We’ll see! :)

  29. Great idea Kiesha ! Will see if I can jump over the small hurdles and get on board with this concept. Everything that happens each day is a blog post if I think about the situation long enough.

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Danielle,

If you believe there’s a blog post in everything that happens, then you’d make a perfect candidate! I encourage you to enter, I think you’ll add flavor to this contest :)

  30. Thanks a lot for sharing, a very beneficial contest to everyone, interesting contest to join, I’ll try…:)

  31. Very nice Idea, I’m thinking about join the contest. Looks like this is a
win win situation for all parts involved.

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Gonzalo!
I agree, I think it will be beneficial for everyone who participates on any level. I’m hoping this contest will change the blog contest game and will shake things up for good. :)

  32. What a great idea, I definitely would like to participate in this contest!

    • Kiesha Easley says:

Hi Sylviane – what a beautiful name!
I would love to see you join this. I think it’s going to be big fun. :)

  33. Hi Keisha

What a fabulous project this is. “Intriguing” it sure will be. Not only a great way to get many new ideas, and experience on implementing them, but a real challenge to stretch beyond the present. Wow. Wonderful even if just watching. But I won’t just watch.

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Anthony,
It’s definitely going to be intriguing that’s for sure! It would be awesome to see you join this contest! I’ll be looking out for you :)

  34. Very interesting, but I only can find time to write a comment :(

  35. Awesome idea, have never participated in something like this, would be great to ‘compete’ with fellow bloggers!

  36. inspiring blog and i love the sound of your contest…i am going to enter as i am looking for a challenge to inspire me to write. thx for opening

  37. Kiesha,

What an awesome idea. I’m considering the sponsorship as we speak. I had never came across your blog until I saw it on the “Traffic Generation Site.” Keep up the good work.
    Chad

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Chad!
Glad you came over from Ana’s site! It would be awesome to have you as a sponsor. Let me know if you have any questions. Contact me and let’s explore the various options. :) With your help, this contest can be even better.

  38. Rob Boirun says:

Great idea here. Is this contest mainly for IM blogging or can tech bloggers be included too? :)

  39. Its going to be another reality show here. Great idea Keisha and would be interesting to see the development.

  40. Blimey Keisha, this sounds brilliant. I love the TV show Survivor and I love blogging so a big winner for me:) Plus you have some amazing sponsors on board. So proud that all those people want to support you. Well done. I’ll be keeping my beady eye on this;)

  41. This is an amazing idea.

  42. Yay! Glad to be part of the sponsors – this is going to be fun to read and keep up with, Kiesha! Great idea.

(I’m the Duct Tape SEO author in case people think I’m hallucinating – which isn’t hard to imagine.)

  43. I have sent you an email via your contact form for sponsoring the contest as a basic level sponsor.

Brilliant idea though and a genius way to get it going.

  44. Keisha, I love the idea of the contest. It pushes people to write better post. I love that you are always trying to help us “New” blogger. Thanks

  45. I too want to enter in the contest.

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Shailesh,
It would be great to have you in this contest. Please refer to the guidelines and submit your entry. Only 1 week left!

  46. Holly Jahangiri says:

Somebody please tell me why I just did what I just did…

  47. Amazing idea! This is a well thought out process that will certainly enhance thousands of blogs by allowing them to get wider and broader ex-posers. Just like I mentioned on my blog that Personal Development and Personal Growth precede success.

  48. This is looking exciting. Great to see interest and love flowing through the airways. Stay blessed all. Peace

  49. Thrilled to be one of the contest sponsors..
All the best Kiesha with the contest.

  50. What a great idea for a contest. I may have a hard time resisting this one…

  51. The most exciting aspect of this whole idea is working with other bloggers to learn new skills and different techniques that you haven’t thought of before. At least that is how I see it. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

  52. This is a great idea, I will keep an eye for next 10 weeks how it goes.

  53. Blessings keisha n supporters. sending you a special south east london hug for your generous suppt n committment to your path. am honored to be part of team2 and prsy for continued spport n guidance. its going to be fun. thx

  54. this is a great competition, i quickly found out the same way as you that if you can join others then you can defintely get the edge.

a team will usually work out better than just one person trying to do everything on their own.

  55. Yep Kiesha you’re right, a team is much more powerful but that doesn’t mean that once you’ve entered an alliance that’s it – you’re hard work is over you can now sit back and relax.

What the newbies to this whole blogging thing should know is that, even tough you are part of an alliance you should still spend quite a few hors a day on your blog…if you want to be successful that is.

On the other hand you shouldn’t act like you’re on “a deserted island” because even tough your blog will benefit, you’ll get tired of this kind of life pretty quickly. And once you realize you had enough of it, it will be really hard to get to love your blog again and it will be really hard for you to go back to blogging.

Really nice idea with the blog contest and all. Congrats!

  56. That’s great to know but I am already late and I don’t have much info about the regional restrictions. Better luck to me next time :)

  57. Another excellent post. Thanks for the quality content of this site.

  58. Muriel Ferrell says:

The majestic sweep of your creative paintbrush touches all who venture within its radius. Thanks for following Ana’s lead (she is awesome, isn’t she?). First off this contest is genius. Give it some more thought, okay?

  59. Sorry I missed this one.

  60. nice post i will take a look at this blogs

  61. Julia Romero says:

The word awesome is so played out, I have to use “beautiful”. OOoh, ooh, I can comment on the contest blogs – do they have to return the favor? Great idea Keisha and would be interesting to see the development. Another excellent post.

  62. Brilliant post – and great idea for a competition, too!

  63. Hi Kiesha,

Very interesting and thought provoking post that certainly worth exploring. Great resources! I will certainly be visiting your blog more often. Thanks for the post!

  64. Very interesting idea, i will adopt it to, thanks ;)

  65. how to get rid of scars fast says:

The applications have been filed, and there are thirteen qualified entrants in Weblogbetter’s Surviving the Blog contest. Thirteen have entered; only ten can participate. And now you get to vote. Vote

  66. simply loved your concept and they way it is designed…am sure such initiatives will play a crucial role in bringing the blogging community together….must say that the concept you have designed is innovative and unheard of in the past…cheers

  67. Hi kiesha

Your blog had a very interesting idea and concept. This is really a one of a kind thing you have come up with. It will help a better interaction among the people in the blogging community. More and more people should come up with such ideas.

  68. Hi Kiesha . You have shared your thoughts on such a gripping concept . Have really liked your idea as this would assuredly increase communication among the bloggers.
Would visit your blog for more of such interesting ideas . Thanks.

  69. Surely Gonna Change my Thinking by reading this.

  70. Well, it is an innovative idea of yours to hold a blogging contest. Seriously, through this blogging contest you can come to know how much people are professional bloggers and how much are just link-creating bloggers. The one thing I really hate about such contest is that choosing a winner is tedious, and they can all depend on luck.

  71. Friendly competition can inspire people to deliver their best so this blogging challenge contest is a brilliant idea. I hope you plan to run it on an anual basis as I’ll take part when it rolls around next. I probably won’t win but it’d be enjoyable to take part all the same!

  72. Hey Kiesha
Its really an amazing idea. This post on surviving the blog reality blog contest out rank out shine is really a unique topic as I think. :P
