How Blogging Could Help You Become a Successful Consultant

Print Friendly

Guest post by Lior Levin

Sometimes, if you have a business or have an area of expertise, patting yourself on the back when blogging can be most beneficial. This is different than boasting about how good you are. It comes down to just plain good old common sense of saying, “Hey, I have some skills that may be beneficial to someone out there.”

Here are a few examples where I have picked up some work in my area and not by blatantly trying to market myself.

As a freelance writer, I often like to take the time out from formal writing and just do some blogging. Many times I come across posts that are related to my field of work where I can offer some suggestions or some help to someone. For example, there are times where a blogger may need to hire a writer but doesn’t know what to ask for or expect. On occasion because of my expertise I have been asked to do the job for them. I actually have a few full time clients that I have picked up this way.

If you have some experience in an area you are blogging about it is always most important to make this known. It is very helpful to fellow bloggers when they can rely on some good knowledge gained from a blog. In addition to this it makes for a much better working relationship in the end, because the individual interested in what you may have to offer has already got a feel for what you may be able to do to help him. It is far better for him than having to start cold looking for the services he needs.

In addition to this though it doesn’t have to be a skill either that you possess. There are many instances where people require the services of a consultant. Let’s assume that you were into web designing and although maybe you are not now actively involved you possess a wealth of information.  What you have to say could be very useful for the blogger that is searching for those types of services. You could certainly offer your services as a consultant.

This is just one example of many. If you gave it some good thought I bet you would be able to come up with lots of ideas that would be perfect from a consulting aspect where it could be a win-win situation for you and other bloggers.

You also have to realize too that by discussing this in your blog, it could be picked up on the search engines and your talents could be discovered by potential clients without you even actively promoting yourself.

So what skills or knowledge do you currently possess that you could share as a consultant?

Most bloggers blog about something they are passionate about or something they know a lot about – so in a sense, this makes them look like experts in those fields.

I have had some serious techie bloggers (who I ask a lot of questions of on their blogs) visit my site to comment just to encourage me and I found out from their comments that they are “would be gardeners” and love lavenders which my niche is about so I was so thrilled to be able to give what I thought was really basic gardening tips for them to be able to grow the lovely lavender successfully. Made me feel good as they have been so generous with their techie help when I have needed it.

      Hi Justin,
Thanks for the info – I’ll definitely take a look at switching to something else. Been thinking about the new Tweet button anyway, just need some time to make the changes… :)

  19. I don’t report my consultation fees as blogging income, but since blogging 2 years ago, I have made over $350 in the past three months doing consulting work for others who use WordPress and just needed some help. I do it on weekends and sometimes at night.

I could probably make $200-$300 per week doing WordPress consulting, I just don’t have the time, and my motto would be:

“If you need assistance contact me and maybe I can find time to help you on Saturday night at 10pm”

Usually people contact you because they have a problem and need help ASAP, which I can’t really support when I have a day job.

Thanks for the biz tips Lior. I also like Tia’s suggestion to include a case study in a blog post that showed results….will have to incorporate that one…

This makes the pat on the back less noticeable!

  22. Tia Peterson says:

    Hi Lior,

You are absolutely right that if you are a consultant, blogging can help you become more successful or get more jobs.

The key is in doing case studies or talking about your work in a results-oriented way. No one wants a consultant who does not get results, so the best thing would be to write a post periodically that covers a case you have been working on and what is happening with it.

Connect with readers so that they can see themselves getting the same results from working with you as a consultant.

For bloggers or other consultants, they can take your stories and learn from them.

I’m taking part of my business and launching a consultancy with it, so this post is very timely and a good reminder for me personally!

    Thanks,
    Tia

I can’t say that I feel like I’m an expert in any one field. I would say I’m more akin to a jack of all trades, I know a little bit about everything but not enough to warrant expert status.

That probably won’t get me any consulting gigs but I’m OK with that lol.
