A while back, I read an article on SourceBlogger.com that talked about how badly Google will penalize you for posting duplicate content. This blogger and I actually had a brief discussion about this and while I agree that if you blatantly plagiarize another blog’s content without crediting or acknowledging the author – you definitely deserved to be penalized – I didn’t wholeheartedly agree that duplicate content should be avoided at all costs.
However, if duplicate content is “the Devil, Bobby Boucher!” then how could ezinearticles.com exist at all? How could any of those sites that aggregate content exist? The issue is far more complex.
There are actually many benefits to posting duplicate content, especially on sites that syndicate articles, such as Social Media Today and The Daily Brainstorm. These sites allow your content to be viewed by wider audiences and are great traffic referral sources.
So, today on TheInfoPreneur, I share 2 Tips for Publishing Duplicate Content without Getting Penalized by Google .
Be sure to drop by and check it out. If you find it to be helpful, please pass it on by RTing and Stumbling.
Have a great day!

I like this and will go read the post you wrote. There is a difference (in my mind, at least) between syndicated content, and duplicate content.
People who use ezinearticles do so for two main reasons: back links, or re-distribution to get their work out there (aka, they are real writers looking to get published).
Back links don’t count unless the page gets indexed, and Google and other search engines don’t index everything. So the versions should always be slightly different.
As with sites like Social Media Today (which I love), I’m okay with them syndicating the content, because (a) it will have been published on my site first and indexed there, and (b) their readership is massive, so I’m just happy to get a few things published in front of that audience.
Many times people will copy a site’s content while providing a link back to the site to give them credit. This is meant to be flattering, but in reality it can hurt the site’s ranking.
I am actually still confused about it.
Because one day, i noticed my post was gone from Google, and it was there.
So i pay attention in a few days, and notice the description is almost similar with the other post. So when i searched the same keyword, instead going to the right exact post, Google shows my other post (which is almost similar)
So i have changed the description of the post, and a few days later, with the same keywords search it goes back there again.
..I guess none knows what Google does..

I wholeheartedly 100% agree that blatant plagarism should not go unpunished. However, I do feel we learn and educate ourselves by reading others expert content. Taking that content and putting our own spin on it should however not be penalized by Google even if some words and sentences are taken from other sources. However, a blog writer should acknowledge the source where that content was taken.
On just another note, I had the impression that as long as content is over 30% original and duplicate content is posted on different sites and not the same site, that was ok in Google’s eyes. But I’m sure there are varying opinions on that theory.

I believe duplicate content isn’t the best idea. Google even mentioned on several articles on their website I read back in January about duplicate content and they would count that against you. They prefer fresh content and do like duplicate content.
Then I see sites like Ezine Articles and wonder how they can get away with it. What am I missing. They way I see, I get annoying see duplicate content, then why should I duplicate my work. I do my best to summarize my work when bookmarking, or posting to sites like tumblr and posterous and link it back to the original. This goes the same when I am guest posting or having someone guest posting. Must be original content, but creating a summarized post somewhere else is okay as long is links back to the original post.
Search engines set the rules and they can change them at anytime, who to say who is right and who is wrong.

I agree with you; What’s “ok” today with search engines can be “bad” in the future.
Personally, I really don’t like seeing duplicate content. I know a few bloggers that do it often, even though it’s legitimate I really don’t get to know what the writer thinks since they consistently reposting content from other a few SEO sites out there. They are allowed to do it, but I want to read their thoughts, not duplicate content I’ve already seen on the original site. :)
Write your own thoughts, if I enjoy what you have to say, I’ll be comment, and I’ll participate in the conversation too. If someone keeps posting duplicate content, I won’t.

Duplicate Content is mostly a BS spread by someone who wanted to capitalize on it. While there are some merits to it – any blog with All In One SEO enabled even with default configuration doesn’t have to be afraid of the “true duplicate content”

Hi Alex,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree that while there are some instances when blogs are violating copyright and are duplicating content illegally, those that are doing it the right way aren’t getting penalized at all.
Hey Kiesha,
In the beginning, I use to think that you got penalized. Just like you mentioned how is it that Ezine Articles and all other article directories able to continue.
I did a lot of research and I found that search engines will be able to tell were the content got originated from. So you don’t get penalize.
I’m going to read what you wrote on the other blog. Great discussion!
Have a great weekend…

Hi Josh,
Thanks for stopping by! I got tired of hearing the debate, so I decided to do my own research as well and found that as long as things are done appropriately, there really is no problem with it.
I don’t see the issue about duplicate articles either but I do consider writing about an article with your own words instead of stealing someone else’s work completely.
Good article!

Hi Eric,
I definitely agree. Blatant plagiarism is completely unacceptable, but I believe it’s okay to republish a noteworthy article on your blog with the proper credit and a brief editorial note about why the article is noteworthy.
