How To Get Your Blogging Confidence Back

You would have never guessed that I was nervous wreck about my first post (July 22, 2010), here at WeBlogBetter.  Well, my blogging confidence was at an all time low right after the post went live.

Sometimes it gets that way, especially when I step outside my comfort zone.  But the true test comes when you perform, execute and follow through with the task at hand.

You must have confidence in yourself, if you don’t, then no one else will.

Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines confidence as 1 a:  a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or of reliance on one’s circumstances b:  faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way 2:  the quality or state of being certain

Your blogging confidence has taken a blow and it’s time for you to make a comeback.

Here are some tips that will help get your confidence back:

1.  Stop comparing yourself to others. Comparing yourself to some one else will kill your confidence quicker than anything.  You are unique, so continue in your uniqueness.

2.  Fake it until you make it.  If your confidence hasn’t arrived, then act like you already have it. Sooner or later, (hopefully sooner) you will find yourself doing things you never thought you could do.

3.  Believe in yourself.  Do you remember the little engine that could?  He kept saying, “I think I can, I think I can, I think can.” When your confidence gets low, just remember the little engine that could.

4.  Keep blogging.  If you enjoy blogging, then don’t let your lack of confidence keep you from doing what you love.

Please share a time when your blogging confidence took a blow and how you got it back?

Good post Evelyn.. You are right about fake it until you make it.. I am in super high confidence mode now because I make myself be in that mood. I know that I am going to make it, but it will take time for everything to fall together.

Any blogger that dreams of overnight success will most likely fail because of disappointment.

Don’t give up, and Don’t back down! Just my words of wisdom.

We all share in that lack of confidence at one time or another. For me, any time I start a new project or a new post there’s a momentary feeling of “I can’t” or “I have nothing to say that anyone would be interested in hearing.” I’m learning to allow that feeling – to just notice it and go on with my work. The feeling fades as the words pile on the page. So, that’s how I get confidence back . . . just do the work.

    Hey Evelyn,

All of these are great key elements when someone has low confidence. However, when you are on the spot it’s game on. If I’m doing something for the first time I like to remind myself that nobody needs to now that I’m nervous because they won’t know. I would have never guess that you were nervous on that post. You practice what you preached on this post. That is awesome! You put together another winner.

Well, my confidence enters the danger zone (but only for a short time) after publishing each and every article. I start to think that whether I have written something absolutely crap..whether others will find interest in it..and so on.
You have provided some useful tips and I will follow them to advance further in blogging, ie, start to write guest posts.

    Evelyn,

There are periods of time when I wonder why I am even bothering publishing another post. It’s much worse when the comments have dried up, and you start asking yourself what you’ve done wrong.

There’s some benefit to questioning your writing from time to time, but I’ve found that if I dwell on it too long my confidence goes down the tube. Most of the time I only have to remind myself of my own reading habits, and how often I’ll stop visiting a blog for a week or two because of something going on in my own life.

I didn’t stop visiting or commenting because of anything the blogger did or didn’t do. So I keep on writing hoping they come back but knowing I’d still be writing even if nobody came to read my posts.

My confidence comes and goes, so I figure it’s bound to come back when it’s ready. Until then, I just keep on plugging along. :)

You Go Girl! Today, I’m using my real name. (lol)

I just wrote a post today and mentioned how I compare myself to other bloggers from time to time but when we do that we either feel inadequate or too cocky! I’m wondering if my zeal for blogging was loss due to my lack of confidence. Hmmm.

    Good post, Evelyn.
I think one of the traps early bloggers fall into is the over thinking of the entire blogging experience. We often wonder how we will be received, what people will think of us, does the post make sense, and on and on. :-) It took me about 7 hours to write that first post.

The reality is this, nothing negative is going to happen after hitting the publish button. No post police will show up at your door and criticize your efforts. What really happens is that people will rally around you and provide encouragement to keep pressing ahead.

After writing for a period of time, we figure out that it’s really nowhere near as tough an experience as originally thought.

I’ve watched you since you came out and your growth has been great to see. Somehow I always knew you had skills. LOL

Keep up the great work, you’ve been on a roll for sometime now. ;-)

      Hi Jimi,
Thanks for stopping by! I’ve experienced and witnessed first hand how other bloggers rally around fellow bloggers and push them along. It is great to have that support, even when we’re not too sure of ourselves. It really helps me keep on keeping on.

I (LOL) when you said “I always knew you had skills.” Compliment warmly received! :)

      Take care!

    Hi Evelyn!
Awesome post. That was such a great post last week, I would’ve never guessed your confidence had wavered. But, I’ve definitely been in a position where I just had to fake it until something happened – so you are right on point with this one.

    • Evelyn says:

      Hey Kiesha!

Thanks a lot! Yeap, I was doubting myself big time, but I pressed through it all. I am learning, to “Just Get Up,” do it, and keep it moving. :)

      Take care!

Your advices are also suitable for our day by day activity, not only blogging. Somehow what we are and how we act can be seen in everything we do.

  12. This is a good article, all bloggers need to have confidence in their writing and opinion. Write clearly, concisely, and with your own voice and you will find people willing to read in time.
