8 Ways I Promote My Blog

Blogging is not easy.  I actually believe it is one of the hardest jobs one can have.  It gets even harder in my neck of the woods, but I continue pushing.  Why? Because I am passionate about putting information out here that will help others change their lives.

Let’s check out how I promote my blog.

  1. Posting regularly.  Regular posts will get your links out there and help improve your Alexa ranking.  If you are not posting, then don’t expect anyone to visit, comment and share your posts.  Note:  I was slack in posting in the month of June and my site suffered for it, but I realize that 5 days a week posting and promoting is what it takes.
  2. Sharing posts on Twitter.  If you don’t promote your posts, then who will?  I shared a few of my top posts, this past weekend and to my surprise I got a few re-tweets.  It is good to share your posts, but don’t over do it.
  3. Feeding posts to Facebook.  I use Networked Blogs to feed posts to my Facebook page.  I also send posts and links from twitter via Hoot Suite.  There are so many ways you can get eyes for your posts.
  4. Visiting Yahoo Answers.  Answer a few questions in your niche on yahoo answers.  While doing so, drop a helpful blog post link from your site that will provide more information to those asking questions.  You may even gain a few subscribers by doing so.
  5. Uploading videos to You Tube.   This can help drive more traffic to your blog, especially if your videos are helpful and informative.  If you are camera shy, just know that you can make videos without ever your face.
  6. Starting a podcast show Blog Talk Radio is a free service that you can use to promote the information that you share as well as drive traffic to your site.  It is a great way to meet other people in your niche too.
  7. Joining a blogging community.  This is a good way to meet other bloggers and help others get their information out there.  You help them, they will help you.
  8. Making appearances everywhere you can.  Show your face on as many sites as you possibly can.  Do this by commenting (don’t just say great post) on other blogs, participating in other social media avenues, and guest posting.  Just get out there and get it done.

I’ve given you 8 ways I promote my blog, but I couldn’t list every thing that I do, because if I did, you would be reading forever.  So, the ball is in your court.  What are some ways you promote your blog?

  1. Hi Evelyn. I’ve had good success lately by posting to Facebook.. Twitter may bring in more traffic but it is not quality. Facebook traffic is more trusted since it is always shared from a trusted source.. I see it convert much better than other social sites. What are you experiences with the different networks and time on site statistics?

    • Hi Aaron!
Thanks for sharing the information about Facebook. I think one does get quality traffic from Facebook, but I also believe the chances of someone viewing a post that’s been shared on Twitter is even greater, because there are more eyes out there to view it. I think of Twitter as being more open while Facebook is rather closed or more personable.

My experience so far is that it is harder for me to get traffic from Facebook right now. Maybe I’m not feeding my posts the right way. Currently I’m using Networked Blogs for both personal and Fan Page. I don’t constantly share my posts on Facebook after I’ve already posted them. I don’t want to fill the stream and tick anyone off.

I’m fairly new with using both to promote my blog. I haven’t looked at statistics very closely, something I should consider.

But one thing I can tell you is that I get more Retweets than Facebook shares. I’ve notice this with several blogs I frequent. I also get more interaction/conversation from Twitter than from Facebook..why this is the case, I don’t know.

I don’t know how much weight that carries, but it tells me that I am connected with more people on Twitter with similar interests than I am on Facebook.

  2. Once a week, I also submit one of my blog posts to several blog carnivals.

  3. A couple of times I have seen my posts linked to from big bloggers who do those “weekly round-up” posts where they find good posts form other blogs. I get nice traffic from these.

  4. I think one effective way to promote your blog or site is to not promote it too much yourself… let other people promote your site for you.

Just focus on doing your #1 Tip of “Quality” Posting of new and original content regularly. People will naturally share your link to others.

To answer your question as to what are some of the things I do to promote my blog or site is to add a link in my email signature.

  5. Hey Evelyn, thanks for the post :) I had fairly good comments and traffic while I was promoting my blog through facebook and twitter alone…but after I commented on a lot of people’s blogs, people start to show up on my site and actually leave comments and retweet your posts.

I have a gaming page on my website so I use my youtube channel to show gameplay videos and promote my site at the same time. I find facebook to be useless now except show posts to my closest friends there out of the thousands I have added there before from those silly FB games.

  6. Evelyn,
That’s a bunch of simple but powerful tips. I do most of these things right but post frequency has been the varying factor of late. Also, I have been very very active and was level 3 or 4 on yahoo answers until they banned me recently :( I requested many times as to why this happened but Yahoo seem to be worse than Google on customer support.

A Youtube propaganda is something that I have never done, which probably I will consider now.

    • Hi Ajith,

When it comes to yahoo, I only share a link to one my post when I think it will answer the person’s question. I make sure not to do this constantly.

Yeah… You Tube is a great way to drive traffic to your site. Your videos must be helpful and beneficial. Give it a try!

  7. Hi Evelyn, thanks for sharing your list. I get quite a lot of visitors from Twitter and the good old Google organic search, but I just joined a blogging community and that is proving to be an excellent way of promoting my blog.

I also promote my website on membership websites within my niche by starting a conversation and leaving a link back to my blog.

I’m yet to jump on the YouTube bandwagon, but I’ll get around to it sooner rather than later to see if I can benefit the way many other bloggers have.

  8. Evelyn, I have to give you two thumbs up for having an AWESOME YouTube Channel. Every time I watch one of your videos I’m inspired to do something healthy. I recommend it to anyone looking for tips on improving their eating habits.

I’m starting to hear more about Yahoo Answers and different techniques to get noticed there. I should give it a try soon.

Great guest post, I know that Kiesha is glad to have you here. You two are a good team.

    • Hi Ileane!
Thank you for the thumbs up! :) I am so happy that you get some inspiration from my videos.

Yeah, I think Yahoo Answers is a great place to meet people and get them to visit your site.

Kiesha, has created a team of writers (Jean, Tia and myself) and I think we make an awesome team. Stay tuned! ;)

      Take care!

  9. Hi Evelyn. One of the most effective ways for me to build my blog has been via blogging communities. I’m a member of the A-List Blogging Club and I’ve built some fabulous relationships and added many subscribers due to things that have grown out of that I also do a lot of commenting when I have time. I try to mix things up and do a bit of everything (haven’t done video or podcasts yet though) to keep things interesting.

    • Hi Jean,
Sounds like a winner! A-List Blogging Club is on my list of communities to join. I see how beneficial communities can be.

      Thanks for sharing!

  10. Thank you for sharing these tips and the processes you use to build your own blog traffic.
I find that blog commenting has been the most effective for traffic but as you mentioned, it is very time consuming and one thing I notice is that if you stop, so does the traffic (to a point)
    Thanks again Evelyn, awesome post

  11. I had never thought of going to Yahoo Answers. I will have to give that a try.

I do most of what you do. The biggest thing for mehas been participating in blogging communities. I am in a few really good ones.

    • Hi Kevin,
Yeah, I just started visiting Yahoo Answers, but I don’t do it on a regular basis. It is a great way also to get blog topic ideas.

That’s cool about the blogging communities. They definitely are good to be a part of.

  12. Hey Evelyn,

You put together a great list here!

On that list there isn’t just one more important than the other. All of them are important. Anyone who follows it will not have any problems with generating traffic.

    Chat with you later…

  13. I’ve “withdrawn” from a lot of inter-connectivity with Facebook. (I discovered that using those “networked blogs” widgets slow my blog load time to a crawl, something I noticed when visiting other blogs displaying FB badges) … I never got any cross-visits from FB anyway … All of my articles auto-post to my twitter account, which gets me “hits” as well as “re-tweets” !!!

    • Hi Dave,

I’m glad you shared this. I have been playing around with placing FB badges on my blog. Right now I have the Like badge for pages, but I may take that off. I go back and forth with it. But for the most part I don’t have many badges from FB.

I’m in the same boat with the cross-visits from FB. I have better results with twitter. :)

      Thanks for sharing!

  14. Hey thanks didn’t know about the yahoo answer and the radio thans a lot I will try them.

  15. Hi Evelyn,

thanks for sharing this amazing list. So far, I haven’t done Yahoo Answers and Blog Talk Radio yet. I’m going to have a closer look at it.

In the comments to this post, there is a discussion what generates more traffic – Facebook or Twitter. I get more traffic from Facebook than from Twitter, because I direct people from my group on Facebook to my blog via group messages. And I would also say, that the quality is better.

    Take care

    • Hi Oliver,
Thanks for sharing the information about FB. I want to use FB more to direct traffic to my site and you have given me a heads up. Thank you so much!

      Take care!

  16. uuuuuuh yahoo answers, thats nice. I found that little tip in a mastermind that I was in and it a killer resource. You know some people say Facebook is good too, but it doesn’t work for me yet. I think its because I don’t have many fans…

    anyway great advice thanks

    • Hi Wilson,

Yeah..yahoo answers is great! FB doesn’t work for me either, well at least not yet. But like you I don’t have many fans and I need to learn more about how to make it work (maybe).. :)

      Take care!

  17. I believe that posting regularly is an important aspect of getting a following. I had a programming blog/diary of the daily techniques I learned. Without an SEO plugins or even thinking about that, visitors started trickling in from various search engines. I’m a firm believer that the fact I posted daily helped build up the site’s traffic.

    • Hi Victor,
Yeah, I had to learn the hard way. When I don’t post, I don’t get visits.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us! Great info!

      Take care!

  18. I just started my blog a few days ago so I know that I have a long way to go. SO far, I am using Facebook and Twitter very heavily to promote it. Shortly after I post a new blog, which has been quite frequent the past days since I’m trying to build it up, I will send the link out via Facebook and Twitter. I have a Facebook page set up that I invited all my friends too so that got me some good traffic the first few days.

My problem right now is finding people that are actually in my niche that will come back again and again. And because my blog is so new, I’m rushing to get enough content up to actually captivate them. Do you have any tips as far as different ways to promote and reach out to my niche? Do you have any tips in general besides the ones you listed? How can I find a blogging community?

    • And also, have you ever heard of “tribes” ?

      • Hi Wayne,
        Thanks for stopping by!

First of all you should definitely have an avatar. You can get one through en.gravatar.com. People need to be able to put a face with a name.

Go out and comment on other blogs. You will find that there could be commentators who are in your blogging niche.

It takes time to get people to your blog. You MUST write compelling content. Content that will give people a reason to visit and converse with you.

So what you should be doing now is pumping out banging content. Once you do this the readers will come. Give them awesome content.

Submit your blog to Blog Directories like technorati, blog catalog, mybloglog…etc. Also register your site with Alexa.

I have heard of tribes but am not a member of one.

This site (WeBlogBetter) has a long list of links and resources that will get you headed in the right direction.

        Best wishes!

        • Thank you for the tips (already implemented one). I have been learning a lot today. I will definitely check out the the directories you listed and also Alexia as I’ve been hearing a lot about that. I will definitely be using this site as a resource.

          • Hi Wayne!
I see you’ve implemented one already.
            Nice avatar! :)

            I wish you the best.
            Take care!

P.S. Good luck with graduate school!

  19. Hi Evelyn,
Your post contains very important list of ways to promote a blog.. My favorite is Fb – I am using networked blogs, posting on my group wall and messaging the members, posting on my tribe wall and on the walls of other marketer’s Fb tribes.. I also like to share it on “That MLM Beat” – http://thatmlmbeat.com/members/milena/ you are welcome to connect with me there :) and I would also like to invite you to share your valuable posts on my Fb tribe – Network Teamwork – The Royal Circle Tribe.

Keep up great work Evelyn, nice to meet you,

  20. I didn’t read any of the other comments and I would be very surprised if anyone else could be this lame, but another way I share my posts is I simply tell people. Actually if I’ve written about something that has happened in my life personally and people want details or just want to know what happened then I direct them to the post. Because I just blog for the heck of it, I may not stress about readers and publicity. The downside to my style of blogging is I run in circles with REAL bloggers. The communities and groups I join are serious and committed bloggers unlike myself. :-(

    • Hi Kissie,
Thanks for stopping by! Sometimes I don’t read the comments. Because I don’t want what others have said to shape what I say.

I read your posts and really like your writing style. I may not comment (I’ll do better), but do know that whenever you post, I’m reading. our style of writing captivates me.

      Take care!

Hello i have recently started a blog ( http://websitepopularity.wordpress.com/ )how can i promote it to get more traffic,

  22. I too utilize Blog Carnivals, and other social networking sites. I really agree with your point on getting your face out there. The one comment mentioned gaining quality traffic,I have found plenty of quality traffic coming from twitter and little from facebook (due to what you mentioned the closed vs open platform). I also submit to reddit and get a lot of visits but little conversions.

    • Hi Daniel,
I haven’t done any Blog Carnivals. I’ll do so soon, though! I’m still figuring out facebook (marketing)..for now twitter is working better. I am on reddit too, but haven’t used it much.

      Thanks for sharing, Daniel!

  27. Evelyn, I also agree that yahoo answers is an awesome way to get traffic. I have been using yahoo answers as a way to get traffic to my blogs for over a year now. I am in the process of trying to promote a new blog and I have never been one to “Tweet”, but with Twitter growing in popularity, it is in fact a great way to promote any blog. Thanks for the tips!

  29. This post and the commens make me think I’m posting my blog announcements to Facebook too much… which means if I think I am, I most certainly am. It’s my biggest driver to my blog, so it’s an easy click. Thank you for all of the other ideas to help wean me off of bombarding my trusted audience.

  30. This post and the comments make me think I’m posting my blog announcements to Facebook too much… which means if I think I am, I most certainly am. It’s my biggest driver to my blog, so it’s an easy click. Thank you for all of the other ideas to help wean me off of bombarding my trusted audience.

  31. These are great points. I have tried some of them. I agree with making appearances. It is important to diversify.

  32. Its beens two months I started my new blog.
The first one is just between me and friends. But now, I hope readers that are complete stranger to me. But I think, Twitter is not very helping….Can somebody explain to me how Twitter is helping?

  33. I submit my blog to the likes of Pimp My Blog, Blog Engage and Blogger Den, with good results coming from the first two. I am also trying out IM Automator which makes submission simplicity itself, but it’s difficult to track down if there’s any response at this early stage.

  34. Hi Evelyn,

Great strategies you are sharing here. I have only started using Yahoo! Answers.

I would also add broadcasting your new blog posts to your list.

    Thanks for sharing these tips.

    All the best,

  35. Heather C Stephens says:

    Hi Evelyn,

I love the list and I do all of these except the podcast and the yahoo answers. Those are great ideas that I look forward to experimenting with. Thanks for the awesome list! :)

  36. Hi Evely I have been doing several of the items you suggest in the list – I haven’t noticed so much difference on my blog as far as number of comments is concerned, but the commenting on other blogs has a huge impact on the alexa ranking – I was away for 4 weeks and obviously didn’t comment in this time and my alexa ranking dropped by 200 000 points!

    Thanks for your input
    Frieke Karlovits

  37. Hi Evelyn,

Like many of the people who commented here, I do many of these things as well. The tip related to blog communities is one that I am getting back into.

I actually stopped blogging for 3 months and have now been back for a month. You mentioned that your site suffered when you stopped posting – I can attest to that. My traffic went down by 50%!

It was worth it as I was able to learn a lot while not posting. But, it was hard to watch my numbers go down by so much.

Things are getting better again. Thanks for the tips!

    Have a nice day!

  38. Being a newby, I can still agree with the way you are promoting your blog. Though I am still learning the pros and cons of blogging but I can feel the importance of your 8 ways to promote a blog. Dedication and hardwork is all it take. Thank you for this informative post.

  39. Joining a blog contest of any nature. Aside from the prize, you sometimes get a backlink to your site. Sometimes, the top ten or top five gets some links. Its another means of exposing your site.

  40. Blogging is very much easy but promoting blog quite very hard.

  44. Only doing about 2 of these currently. Looks like I’ve got some work to do :O

  45. Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for posting this great list. I am a newbie blogger, but want to implement some of your ideas. Perhaps I missed it, but do a lot of bloggers promote via an e-mail marketing service? That’s what I’m working on right now, and would love to get your thoughts.

    Thanks again!

    • Kiesha Easley says:

      Hi Tess,
Periodically, I send out newsletters that highlight a popular post from the week. I use MailChimp – it’s free up to like 2000 subscribers and let you send out lots of emails. You customize the templates and even schedule messages ahead of time.

    • Hi Tess,

Some bloggers do promote via email marketing. I currently send out a weekly email sharing the posts for the week. Since I started doing that, I’ve noticed an increase in those that read the email. Also, I try to do a monthly newsletter. So it does help! :)

I think you are doing the right thing.

      Take care,

  46. Hi Evylin,
    Good to be here again,
I appreciate your 8 point formula for promoting your blogs. I could relate to most of your points, few are a bit difficult ones, anyways, i am trying to follow these tips again more seriously.
Thanks Eve for sharing these valuable points

  47. Hello Evelyn

I been blogging for a month now but still finding it hard to get actual readers. Will give your advice a try. Thanks for sharing

  48. Hi Evelyn,

As I was reading your post I was using it as a check list. So far I have done a few of those tips, but there are others I will have to check out.

  49. Evelyn,
I never seem to make the time to answer questions in either Yahoo or LinkedIn and reading this suggestion in your article is a great reminder of just how important that is. Thanks.

  50. Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for sharing the 8 ways, doing all but havent tried a podcast show.Apart from social networks like fb and twitter blogging communities like blogengage, blokube and bloginteract are good to share the content as well and getting knowledge too from it and awesome for me where I am meeting new webmasters everyday

  51. Hi Evelyn,

I found this post on Blokube and I am so glad I did. You share some great information here and I will be sure to come back to read again.

I also use all of the ways you mention here to promote my blog and I also use forums to generate traffic as well.

Thanks for sharing Evelyn and have a great day!

  52. Dave Clements says:

Using Yahoo Answers to answer people’s questions about your niche is a great idea. Something I do more frequently than that though is visit a Saved Search on Twitter for iPhone, looking for tweets that contain the words WordPress and help in then, so that I can offer a helping hand. Has been a great help and has even resulted in some paid work.

  53. You have given some very useful tips which I am working on and hopefully to get succeed.

  54. Javier says:

    wow! this blog is famous!

I wish one day, mine will be as cool as this one :)
can I leave a link? yes? ok yes :)

hey what is that little “comment luv” thing?

  55. Wow, this is simple and yet useful information to increase blog traffic. I have used some of them and waiting to see the effect on my blog.
I just notice that Twitter may not help that much compared to Facebook. Frankly, i would just browse through my Twitter to find some interesting topic instead of examining tweet one by one. Do i reflect what my Twitter follower do? LOL

    • Hi Ricky,

I have noticed that too about Twitter. Twitter and Facebook are social sites that I must be very active on to get good results. I’m finding that a combination of places to promote my blog gets more eyes. So it is best to diversify where and how you promote your blog.

      Take care,

  56. Information tips! for a good blog its necessery to update your blog with fresh contents. More contents more traffic and good page rank. And you say yahoo answer thats good i also using yahoo answer its a nice way to get traffic and also good backlinks.

  57. Youtube videos and podcast are something I have never tried. Blogging is becoming so competitive that to maintain rankings and link building every possible way is welcome. Thanks Evelyn for the useful list.

  58. I too am considering the podcast way but a bit short on my technical knowledge. May be I would seek your help in future when I gather enough urge to explore podcasting.

  59. Thanks for the advice. Never thought of the podcast idea. I’m going to have to look into that :)

  60. great information..thanks…:D

  61. great information..thanks..:D

  62. hi. Thanks for sharing this. Its really interesting to get such an insight into how someone else goes about promoting their blog. You are right that out is really hard work. Sometimes I think the hardest thing is having that will and determination to continue to believe in what you set out to do at the start.it can be quite dispiriting when you start out with lots of posting and subscribing to directories etc but have no visitors too read what you post. There are some good tips here. The yahoo answers one is a good one.

  63. I just stumbled upon this post now as I am just starting to learn how to promote my blog. As many mentioned above, blogging is tough, but I do it for fun and to educate people as well as myself. It would be great to make money from it, too, because that’s where the hard work comes in I guess. Thanks for sharing your tips and what is working for you. All the best!

  64. Hi Evelyn,

Those are sure ways to get your blog noticed. I agree that social media platforms such as facebook and twitter can be great tools in spreading the word. Utilizing such platforms properly can definitely boost the traffic on your blog.

  65. I literally just started blogging last night after threatening to do it for months. I had no idea there was so much info out here! I guess I’d better get over to Twitter and set up an account. Love your blog, I wanna be like you when I grow up : )

  66. I enjoy reading how others promote their blogs. I can always use fresh and new ideas. You are so right about continuing to post. Thanks

  67. Thank You very much for the new blog promotion ideas, I try to network as much as I can. Thanks
