8 Ways I Promote My Blog

Blogging is not easy.  I actually believe it is one of the hardest jobs one can have.  It gets even harder in my neck of the woods, but I continue pushing.  Why? Because I am passionate about putting information out here that will help others change their lives.

Let’s check out how I promote my blog.

  1. Posting regularly.  Regular posts will get your links out there and help improve your Alexa ranking.  If you are not posting, then don’t expect anyone to visit, comment and share your posts.  Note:  I was slack in posting in the month of June and my site suffered for it, but I realize that 5 days a week posting and promoting is what it takes.
  2. Sharing posts on Twitter.  If you don’t promote your posts, then who will?  I shared a few of my top posts, this past weekend and to my surprise I got a few re-tweets.  It is good to share your posts, but don’t over do it.
  3. Feeding posts to Facebook.  I use Networked Blogs to feed posts to my Facebook page.  I also send posts and links from twitter via Hoot Suite.  There are so many ways you can get eyes for your posts.
  4. Visiting Yahoo Answers.  Answer a few questions in your niche on yahoo answers.  While doing so, drop a helpful blog post link from your site that will provide more information to those asking questions.  You may even gain a few subscribers by doing so.
  5. Uploading videos to You Tube.   This can help drive more traffic to your blog, especially if your videos are helpful and informative.  If you are camera shy, just know that you can make videos without ever your face.
  6. Starting a podcast show Blog Talk Radio is a free service that you can use to promote the information that you share as well as drive traffic to your site.  It is a great way to meet other people in your niche too.
  7. Joining a blogging community.  This is a good way to meet other bloggers and help others get their information out there.  You help them, they will help you.
  8. Making appearances everywhere you can.  Show your face on as many sites as you possibly can.  Do this by commenting (don’t just say great post) on other blogs, participating in other social media avenues, and guest posting.  Just get out there and get it done.

I’ve given you 8 ways I promote my blog, but I couldn’t list every thing that I do, because if I did, you would be reading forever.  So, the ball is in your court.  What are some ways you promote your blog?

Hi Evelyn. I’ve had good success lately by posting to Facebook.. Twitter may bring in more traffic but it is not quality. Facebook traffic is more trusted since it is always shared from a trusted source.. I see it convert much better than other social sites. What are you experiences with the different networks and time on site statistics?

    • Hi Aaron!
Thanks for sharing the information about Facebook. I think one does get quality traffic from Facebook, but I also believe the chances of someone viewing a post that’s been shared on Twitter is even greater, because there are more eyes out there to view it. I think of Twitter as being more open while Facebook is rather closed or more personable.

My experience so far is that it is harder for me to get traffic from Facebook right now. Maybe I’m not feeding my posts the right way. Currently I’m using Networked Blogs for both personal and Fan Page. I don’t constantly share my posts on Facebook after I’ve already posted them. I don’t want to fill the stream and tick anyone off.

I’m fairly new with using both to promote my blog. I haven’t looked at statistics very closely, something I should consider.

But one thing I can tell you is that I get more Retweets than Facebook shares. I’ve notice this with several blogs I frequent. I also get more interaction/conversation from Twitter than from Facebook..why this is the case, I don’t know.

I don’t know how much weight that carries, but it tells me that I am connected with more people on Twitter with similar interests than I am on Facebook.

A couple of times I have seen my posts linked to from big bloggers who do those “weekly round-up” posts where they find good posts form other blogs. I get nice traffic from these.

Hey Evelyn, thanks for the post :) I had fairly good comments and traffic while I was promoting my blog through facebook and twitter alone…but after I commented on a lot of people’s blogs, people start to show up on my site and actually leave comments and retweet your posts.

I have a gaming page on my website so I use my youtube channel to show gameplay videos and promote my site at the same time. I find facebook to be useless now except show posts to my closest friends there out of the thousands I have added there before from those silly FB games.

I think one effective way to promote your blog or site is to not promote it too much yourself… let other people promote your site for you.

Just focus on doing your #1 Tip of “Quality” Posting of new and original content regularly. People will naturally share your link to others.

To answer your question as to what are some of the things I do to promote my blog or site is to add a link in my email signature.

  6. Evelyn,
That’s a bunch of simple but powerful tips. I do most of these things right but post frequency has been the varying factor of late. Also, I have been very very active and was level 3 or 4 on yahoo answers until they banned me recently :( I requested many times as to why this happened but Yahoo seem to be worse than Google on customer support.

A Youtube propaganda is something that I have never done, which probably I will consider now.

    • Hi Ajith,

When it comes to yahoo, I only share a link to one my post when I think it will answer the person’s question. I make sure not to do this constantly.

Yeah… You Tube is a great way to drive traffic to your site. Your videos must be helpful and beneficial. Give it a try!

Hi Evelyn, thanks for sharing your list. I get quite a lot of visitors from Twitter and the good old Google organic search, but I just joined a blogging community and that is proving to be an excellent way of promoting my blog.

I also promote my website on membership websites within my niche by starting a conversation and leaving a link back to my blog.

I’m yet to jump on the YouTube bandwagon, but I’ll get around to it sooner rather than later to see if I can benefit the way many other bloggers have.

  8. Evelyn, I have to give you two thumbs up for having an AWESOME YouTube Channel. Every time I watch one of your videos I’m inspired to do something healthy. I recommend it to anyone looking for tips on improving their eating habits.

I’m starting to hear more about Yahoo Answers and different techniques to get noticed there. I should give it a try soon.

Hi Evelyn. One of the most effective ways for me to build my blog has been via blogging communities. I’m a member of the A-List Blogging Club and I’ve built some fabulous relationships and added many subscribers due to things that have grown out of that I also do a lot of commenting when I have time. I try to mix things up and do a bit of everything (haven’t done video or podcasts yet though) to keep things interesting.

Thank you for sharing these tips and the processes you use to build your own blog traffic.
I find that blog commenting has been the most effective for traffic but as you mentioned, it is very time consuming and one thing I notice is that if you stop, so does the traffic (to a point)

I’ve “withdrawn” from a lot of inter-connectivity with Facebook. (I discovered that using those “networked blogs” widgets slow my blog load time to a crawl, something I noticed when visiting other blogs displaying FB badges) … I never got any cross-visits from FB anyway … All of my articles auto-post to my twitter account, which gets me “hits” as well as “re-tweets” !!!

    • Evelyn says:

      Hi Dave,

I’m glad you shared this. I have been playing around with placing FB badges on my blog. Right now I have the Like badge for pages, but I may take that off. I go back and forth with it. But for the most part I don’t have many badges from FB.

I’m in the same boat with the cross-visits from FB. I have better results with twitter. :)

      Thanks for sharing!

  15. Hi Evelyn,

thanks for sharing this amazing list. So far, I haven’t done Yahoo Answers and Blog Talk Radio yet. I’m going to have a closer look at it.

In the comments to this post, there is a discussion what generates more traffic – Facebook or Twitter. I get more traffic from Facebook than from Twitter, because I direct people from my group on Facebook to my blog via group messages. And I would also say, that the quality is better.

    Take care

I believe that posting regularly is an important aspect of getting a following. I had a programming blog/diary of the daily techniques I learned. Without an SEO plugins or even thinking about that, visitors started trickling in from various search engines. I’m a firm believer that the fact I posted daily helped build up the site’s traffic.

  18. Wayne Howard says:

I just started my blog a few days ago so I know that I have a long way to go. SO far, I am using Facebook and Twitter very heavily to promote it. Shortly after I post a new blog, which has been quite frequent the past days since I’m trying to build it up, I will send the link out via Facebook and Twitter. I have a Facebook page set up that I invited all my friends too so that got me some good traffic the first few days.

My problem right now is finding people that are actually in my niche that will come back again and again. And because my blog is so new, I’m rushing to get enough content up to actually captivate them. Do you have any tips as far as different ways to promote and reach out to my niche? Do you have any tips in general besides the ones you listed? How can I find a blogging community?

    • Wayne Howard says:

        Hi Wayne,
        Thanks for stopping by!

First of all you should definitely have an avatar. You can get one through en.gravatar.com. People need to be able to put a face with a name.

Go out and comment on other blogs. You will find that there could be commentators who are in your blogging niche.

It takes time to get people to your blog. You MUST write compelling content. Content that will give people a reason to visit and converse with you.

So what you should be doing now is pumping out banging content. Once you do this the readers will come. Give them awesome content.

Submit your blog to Blog Directories like technorati, blog catalog, mybloglog…etc. Also register your site with Alexa.

I have heard of tribes but am not a member of one.

This site (WeBlogBetter) has a long list of links and resources that will get you headed in the right direction.

        Best wishes!

    Hi Evelyn,
Your post contains very important list of ways to promote a blog.. My favorite is Fb – I am using networked blogs, posting on my group wall and messaging the members, posting on my tribe wall and on the walls of other marketer’s Fb tribes.. I also like to share it on “That MLM Beat” – http://thatmlmbeat.com/members/milena/ you are welcome to connect with me there :) and I would also like to invite you to share your valuable posts on my Fb tribe – Network Teamwork – The Royal Circle Tribe.

I didn’t read any of the other comments and I would be very surprised if anyone else could be this lame, but another way I share my posts is I simply tell people. Actually if I’ve written about something that has happened in my life personally and people want details or just want to know what happened then I direct them to the post. Because I just blog for the heck of it, I may not stress about readers and publicity. The downside to my style of blogging is I run in circles with REAL bloggers. The communities and groups I join are serious and committed bloggers unlike myself. :-(

Hello i have recently started a blog ( http://websitepopularity.wordpress.com/ )how can i promote it to get more traffic,

  22. I too utilize Blog Carnivals, and other social networking sites. I really agree with your point on getting your face out there. The one comment mentioned gaining quality traffic,I have found plenty of quality traffic coming from twitter and little from facebook (due to what you mentioned the closed vs open platform). I also submit to reddit and get a lot of visits but little conversions.
