Why I chose to do a “soft” product launch
I’ve read a good hand full of posts recently about how people are sick and tired of product launches. I’ll be honest, I totally understand.
I’m a blogger, but I’m a human being first and I’ve always been the kind of person that prefers to shop when I’m not being prompted to BUY!BUY!BUY! every five seconds.
I’m the person who goes into a store and instead of being glad that salespeople are eagering asking if they can help me, I’m often put off by it. I prefer to have to look for them when I need help – Am I totally backwards or what? I know people who get irritated when salesmen don’t break their necks to serve them. I’m the exact opposite.
That’s why instead chosing a complete over the top product launch – I’ve chosen a simple product “release.”
So if you’re wondering why you haven’t seen pop-ups or a parade with fireworks, sirens, bullhorns and whistles – that’s why – because I prefer a more low-key approach – to spare you from a nasty bout of “obnoxious product launch syndrome”.
A few weeks ago, I released:

Couldn’t agree more — when it’s noisy or obnoxious, I tune out (especially online). There’s an art to the soft sell, unfortunately most don’t take the time to understand it.
Hey Kiesha, I definitely agree with you. I’m also the kind of buyer who doesn’t want to be followed by the salesperson. That’s a big turn off to me. I want it light and simple.

Why dont you make a rant about how obnoxious all these launches are – then you may get the attention for a while and you have launch…START at least
I think people may be sick of launches, but I also believe most of those people are jealous that others are successful at it. Big launches still work….
I think you are confusing an organized, structured, well planned launch process with pushiness.
I know what you’re saying about “fatigue”. The problem is niche-specific, we’re all in this echo chamber following similar techniques and every now and then there is a storm of product releases.
No harm in trying the soft launch approach but I’d be interested to hear how it goes, because 950% of people I know who have tried it have had poor results (and the others had such massive audiences it didn’t matter how badly they did a launched).

Hey Kiesha – Good luck with your launch. I believe that choosing to go the affiliate route is actually a form of soft selling (for you). Putting up a lot of information on the page about the book and how it will help will be good.
I agree with Josh also that the hard sell works, too. But I, like you, would prefer a soft sell approach and using affiliates to spread the word.

Hi Tia,
Thanks! I could never be a die-hard saleswoman, it’s just not me. That’s probably why I’ll never be rich, but that’s okay by me – money isn’t everything.
The only echo I want to propagate is “HEAR! HEAR!” I respect the Launch system and have even learned from the process but, echoing your sentiments, I’m a soft-seller.
Folks keep asking me when I am going to launch my product. I just hem-haw. But truthfully, I subscribe to the theory of word-of mouth.
You CAN get rich from the process of providing quality products. Don’t sell yourself short – LOL – I can’t escape word play, can I? Just focus on the post-launch bits of the system, you know, little things like customer service, upsells, contests – ever think of doing a contest, Kiesha?
Cheers,
Mitch

Hey Kiesha,
There is a reason why some of the folks use more of the pushy style than laid back. It works!
There are 4 types of personality. When launching a product is great to address all four so you are not leaving any sales on the table.
Are you planning on doing any email marketing for this book?

Hi Josh,
I actually have done some light marketing with the preview copies that I continually make available to subscribers when I send out my newsletters.
Hi Kiesha,
You and I are the same when it comes to shopping. I like to be left alone and whenever I have a question, I’ll get the salesperson. I’m a low-key kind of person too. So, I totally feel on you that.
Much success and many blessings on your e-book launch. I can’t wait to check it out! :)
Take care!

Hi Evelyn,
I appreciate the blessings – that’s all I need! :)
That’s great Kiesha! I too hate the pushy style that so many people adopt with product releases.
Wish you all the best with your publication, I’m sure it’s chock full of good advice!

Hi Joella,
Thanks! I appreciate that!
I don’t believe you are backwards at all! In fact I am the exact same way.
I have had a WAY better ratio of closing sales when I use a hands off, take it or leave it approach. As soon as a prospect feels like you NEED their business, they will immediately be turned off… regardless of amazing your product may be.
I always try to lead with value and education based marketing. If the customer wants to learn more and see what they will get if they buy, I’m happy to share but I will never put pressure. Mainly because I HATE when people do that to me.
Pretty much every client that is with me today was sold using this approach and we have a great working relationship because of it.

Hi Justin,
I’m glad to hear that I’m in good company. I much rather have people seek me out for what they need rather than me chasing them like a mad stalker :)
