Why your blog matters

Guest post by Mars Dorian

I don’t know you.

But since you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re just a mouse click away from me, even if you happen to live on the other side of the planet.

The holy internet has vaporized distances, and those that remain are the invisible ones between me and you.

I still believe that most Bloggers don’t fully grasp the potential – the pure potential of it all – EVERYONE is just a mouse click away.

And with the possibility to reach everyone comes the power to influence anyone.

People don’t think about how much of a difference they can make , even with little things.

Now, I breathe digital life, and I almost love it more than my mother, but even I go out once in a while and experience compassion in the offline world.

TRUE love

I knew a guy who always used to send beautifully drawn postcards, even to people he wasn’t friends with. I always wondered why he did it, as he barely knew most of the people, and wasn’t getting anything in return. I haven’t met this guy for a few years now, and I almost forgot about him. Last month I got a postcard, and it was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I didn’t have to look at the name to know from whom it was coming from.

true LOVE

Last summer was a blast of endless joy – the weather seemed to be on fire 24/7, people were more dancing than walking through the streets, and every breath you took just felt like pure potential. One sweaty summer night, I went out for a walk and met some young Spanish guys who were looking for an awesome club. I tried to explain the location to them, but their English was as broken as my Spanish. The club was in another district, quite a distance away, and I couldn’t tell them how to get there. I paused for a second, and did something I had never done before – I walked them to the club, a total of 2 hours.

We finally arrived, and they couldn’t understand why I did it, and decided to invite me to the club. They insisted on paying for all of my drinks and what can I say, we had a BALL. I got their Facebook names, and it looks like I’m going to Spain this summer.

TRUE LOVE

I was backpacking Mexico a few years ago, and at one point I completely ran out of cash. It was a desperate situation. But when your trust in life remains strong, even if your world comes crashing down, miracles start to happen.  I met a sweet family at the beach, and after explaining my situation, they let me stay at their house for a smashing 4 weeks (!). They provided delicious meals for me three times a day, taught me horse riding at their ranch and said goodbye to me by organizing a huge party and inviting half of the neighbourhood. They were the kindest “strangers” I’ve ever met.

Back to the digital world

I don’t know how big your blog is. And I don’t know If you’re in the Alexa top 100,000 or just starting out with a handful of readers, yourself included.

Honestly, that doesn’t matter so much. What matters more is that every little tweet, every blog post and every comment you make could cause a change in someone else’s life.

There are no strangers anymore, you affect your readers and they affect you.

And with that I don’t mean you have to write mushy and sentimental stuff, no no no, you can kick-ass with any topic you want to.

If it’s a technical post, can you make it super-amazing and make people crave that WordPress plugin? Or you write about customer service, and you could explain how inspiring it is to give your honest and super-caring feedback?

You see, no matter your topic, you can always flavor it with something magical, something that will really help your reader and/or touch their soul!

I think you can. And I think you should!

We’re all in this together, no gesture remains hidden, everything will be remembered in the global consciousness  of our world.

You can make a difference even with the smallest message. Why not start today?

Are you with me?

Forget blogging, after reading about your travels, I need to start getting out there myself, haha. Just kidding!

I remember when I first started seeing visits from across the world in my Analytics account, and it was (and still is) very exciting to me. It’s amazing to think about all the different stories I’ve read, people’s lives I’ve learned about, and places across the world that I would have never even heard of had it not been for blogging and the internet. Not only is it extremely interesting, it can be humbling too!

Thank you for another great post. I submitted it to stumble upon.

I found that one of the best ways to get traffic and build a blogging community is by caring about people. Try to figure out what people need and give them the answers they’re looking for. I try to respond to every question people ask on my blog. I also make my e-mail address available to any visitor in case anyone e-mail me with their questions.

I love this post, Dorian! I agree that we can make a difference even with the simplest tweet. I’ll never forget my first testimonial I received on twitter from someone who said that they read my blog everyday and that it has changed there life. I’ll never forget walking away from my computer afterward with a smile on my face thinking, this is why I do it… this is why I blog, to help other people in ways I never thought I could.

    Mars,
as always this was an awesome post. It is that global appeal that continues to intrigue me – love it when I make the mistake of telling someone “Good morning” and then have them come back and say, “Good morning? It’s bedtime!” I laugh out loud every time. It never ceases to amaze me. I love it!

      Hey Kiesha,

Yeah, you’re absolutely right, Kiesha, it is AWESOME. To know that people come from the Philippines, the States, India or even some tiny village somewhere on the planet is just epic in my eyes. You have to take the approach that Hollywood started about 15 years ago: In Hollywood, you don’t make American movies anymore, you make movies for the world !”

Mars, you are awesome! This article was simply MAGIC!! I could see everything you described, but more, it made me want to draw some postcards (or did up the ones I got in Paris) and send them to folks who could use some joy.

I love that you made little bloggers like me feel equal in impact with people like Chris Brogan, Pam Slim, you and Keisha. That’s a gift!

Now I need to go put up a post at my blog! Thanks so much for brightening my day!!

And don’t worry about being “small”. Everyone starts somewhere – and every little post will make an impact, be it small or big. I truly believe that if you rock your “smallness”, then you will have no problem going big – every avalanche starts with a snowball !

Being online is another way we can touch someone else’s life, by sharing our knowledge or by helping in whatever way you can. It really makes a difference to someone who is really looking to fix something and when they read your blog and learn how you’ve faced the same problem and how you’ve fixed it, it gives them the courage to fix their problem themselves too.

    • Mars Dorian says:

      Hey Selurus,

exactly. It’s comforting to know that you’re not the only one who’s stuck – there are millions who have the same problems, and by blogging about it – the whole world gets to know how you overcame them !

  15. I have had people tell me that the internet is a cold and impersonal place. I think this is just a reflection of their attitude. They approach their world in all it’s aspects in a hostile and suspicious way.

I like your attitude much better. I’ve met some awesome and inspiring people online. Whether online or off, you just have to look with an open heart and open mind to find the most amazing people and experiences.

    Thanks for the reminder!

I think the world is the way you look at it – I’ve always considered the net as a place full of endless possibilities and great people – and that’s what I happen to find ! I only concentrate on the good parts, and ignore everything else. Creativity is my life force !

  16. I am with you! I definitely think we have the ability, power f you will to influence people that we know online. More importantly we are influencing folks that we don’t know online. So we have a pretty big responsibility at the end of our finger tips.

      Hey Ms. Freeman !

I remember that line from Spiderman: With great power comes great responsibility !

But we should feel lighthearted about it – if we share the positivity wave of our passionate fire, we’ll definitely enrich some humans along the way. My core principle is always FUN, no matter what I write about !

    Hey Mars – good post.

I don’t have too many readers just yet (please stop by if you get a chance), so your comments about the possibilities is very much a concept that I have been considering a lot recently.

The line that got me was “…EVERYONE is just a mouse click away.” That is true, and because of that, the possibilities are seemingly limitless. Once someone has clicked, what do you want them to see?

We can create true change where we believe it needs to be.

That is what I got from your post.

Thanks & have a good day!

      Hey Mark,

Thanks a lot. Yep, just one click away. And even if your blog is small in the beginning (we all start somewhere !), making sure that we’ll enrich the life of those who come in contact with us. If that’s just a handful in the beginning, that’s fine. Give them a blast, and they will spread the message. Soon, you’ll be snowballing your traffic.
If you put the hours in ;)
