To blog or do laundry? – That is the question!

I can’t pretend that I’ve always been the most enthusiatic clothes-washer (laundry do-er?), but ever since I’ve been blogging, I’ve been experiencing more and more “no-socks” moments. Baskets of clothes go unfolded for days and it’s a sign that I’ve got to do a better job of managing my time.

Lately, I’ve been questioning everything I do – asking if it’s a good use of my time. It makes me select activities very carefully and makes me more aware of the time that I need to spend with my family. It brings me to a point where I must prioritize and make a decision. After a certain hour, you’ve probably noticed  that my online activities are limited.

Recently @JustKissie sent me a tweet asking if I’d gone on vacation. I wish! It was certainly heartwarming to know that my presence had been missed, but it made me feel bad that some of my friends and followers are feeling a bit neglected.  I still periodically check in via my cell phone to moderate comments and will respond to urgent issues, but for the most part, I’ve been a bit more absent than usual.

I’m not trying to be elusive or less active in the blogosphere, but lately due to the events of life, I have no choice. It’s so easy to get stuck online, link hopping from one thing to the next. At the moment those online distractions seem so pressing, I’ve got to read that post; then, I’ve got to comment – oh, yeah, I should retweet it. Oh, look there’s a new tweet from… Oooh, enter to win… next thing I know it’s 1 a.m. and I have nothing to show for my time.

I’m not saying taking the time to socialize with my followers and friends is not a time worthy activity, it’s just that I need to get more disciplined and practice setting a timer so that I won’t spend all my time in the wrong places.

Before I even open my browser, I have to make a list of my goals before I even get started so that I don’t run out of time, without even completing what I set out to do.

If I finish with a few moments to spare, that’s when I’ll go back and take a look at a great post I’ve stumbled upon.

What can I say, my family needs socks! How do you keep up with your household chores, spend time with the family, and still manage to have time to blog?

  2. Hi Kiesha,

That is a serious and a funny question, usually quite hard to answer. It is ironical that we choose to work from home because we can kick the 9-5 dumb-ass jobs on their butts and earn in a more relaxed and flexible manner.

But I think that the 9-5s are really better than sit-in-front-of-computers 24/7/365 bloggers.

I can only say that much.

    Cheers,
    Jane.

Yep, digital life and real life – the eternal struggle !
But it’s actually not that hard – you just got to listen to your intuition. There’s a self-regulating balance which tells you when to start and when to quit – it takes training, but once you tune in to your voice it’s easy peasy !

How do you think we keep up, exactly like what you’re saying! If we don’t prioritize and follow through, we’ll miss more than socks.

Jimi Jones mentioned once to use a timer….it hasn’t worked for me. But, it’s a great idea for someone who is committed to accomplishing more and maintaining a healthy balance.

We have to plan our days and then live our plans.

Man, I’m praying for that vacation to soon come….who knows, it might be the prize of one of those contests!

Your presence is so significant and delightful that you have to LOSE socks and more to impact us like that.

    Girl, chill out!

Love you much and you deserve a break today.

Haha. This is a charming post. Surely,if you are out of socks, the decision becomes very easy.

As much fun as on-line communities and blogs are, non-virtual life has a way of being inconvenient.

    Have a great weekend!!!

      Hi Mark,
You’d think the decision would be easy, but blogging is so much more fun than laundry. Honestly, I don’t mind putting them in the washer and moving them from the dryer – it’s the folding I hate. It takes me so long because I can’t stand for my clothes not to be folded tight and neatly.
      Oh well… :)

Thanks, I’m trying my best to focus… somedays I do better than others… I’m in constant need of prayer. Thankfully, that works! :)

Interesting topic Keisha, I think you said it best. It comes down to managing time. I think you’re doing a great thing by setting daily goals before you even sit down to work. I think the problem is sticking to that list of goals. I think that in addition to setting daily goals, you have to set time limits for the amount of time to do each task and stick to it. That’s the big part… sticking to it.

Thanks for sharing, Keisha!! Keep up the great work my friend!

      Hi Jarrod!
Yeah, but I must admit too, that somedays I can stick that list like glue, but then other days, I’m ashamed to say, I have to ask myself… “How did I even get on this site?” and the worst one… “How late is it?” :)

  9. I totally hear you on that Kiesha, this online game can be very addictive sometimes. Sounds like you’re very passionate about what you do.
And as you’ve rightly pointed out, prioritising keeps you on track with your goals, both on/offline.

    Have a good day
