I’m not a negative person, and I’m not preparing for the worst, but I am concerned about what I read in Shoemoney’s post: Is the Death of Youtube comin?.
While I don’t necessarily post a lot of videos of my own, I know a quite a few bloggers who rely heavily on Youtube videos. It helps them keep their blog alive when they can’t write and helps them share content at a level that’s not possible any other way, such as that required for a how-to tutorial.
I realize companies want to protect their copyrighted material, but the lawsuit that Youtube is facing now could have consequences that I’m guessing would surely bankrupt its owners or change the site so dramatically that it would be virtually useless. Already the changes in the way background music can be applied is so annoying that in some cases it’s almost better not to have any at all.
Youtube has changed the way we watch television or NOT, and has given a voice to the voiceless – what will happen if the site is no more? Where else can one find and old 1980s video that can’t be found anywhere on television? Where else can you become famous and get mentioned on VH1 for making a silly (or genius, depending on your take) song like “Chocolate Rain”? Where else will we be able to create our own videos and gain the same level of exposure?
What will it mean for you as a blogger?
I realize new video sites are popping up at fast rate and I guess it wouldn’t hurt to start getting to know these sites a lot better. I’ve been checking out Vimeo lately. But tell me, if we lose Youtube, what’s the next best site? What other video sites are you using? And how do they compare to Youtube? Do you think they’ll ever be able to compare?

I think this real good information for bloggers, as they should be aware about the things.

Like everything, things evolve. But for now I don’t think YouTube is going anywhere fast!
Hi Kiesha,
First time visiting so please don’t take my following comments as representative of my normal positive, up-beat and supportive attitude!
What kind of crack is Shoemoney smoking?! The death of YouTube!? You have all my praise for thinking ahead and making a plan for something that may very well be inevitable but I’m pretty sure your preparations for an alien invasion or zombie infestation will come in handy long before you need to start worrying about the collapse of the most widely used, well-known, technically advanced and monetarily valued web video company.
Don’t think that because I am so sure about this I’m a YouTube fan – I despise the way they roll-over like sleep-deprived puppies whenever a lawyer whispers the words ‘copyright infringement’ – but you have to admit they are the 600 pound gorilla of web video and it’s a gorilla fed on content YouTube doesn’t have to pay for and a gorilla that um, sweats, money. And money’s what makes the world go round. Even lawyers know that (especially lawyers). Nobody’s going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.
i use Youtube to watch Taylor Swift videos. I always watch movie clips on Youtube. What an awesome site. `.
I love watching videos online specially on Youtube. There are lots of music clips, movie clips and instructional videos on Youtube. I love em all.
I wouldn’t say YouTube is going to die, but the value is certainly deteriorating quickly. But that’s sort of the lifecycle for social sites on the web…everyone jumps on board, kills it, then moves onto the next big thing.

Very true. And as soon as I think I have most of my bases covered with Social Media, there’s three new ones that I have to figure out

We’ll have to see what the next YouTube is going to be. Honestly, I haven’t used YouTube even close to as much as I used to in the past months. It became ad cluttered, censored, and just more of a pain to use than it was worth.

At this point it won’t hurt much. There’s a small percentage of Youtube hits that come over from my Youtube channel but I’m not relying so heavily on Youtube as much as I am my own efforts to get traffic.
It’s my intention to start off with a good foundation. Creating quality content, manual marketing (which involves blog commenting, guest posting and some SEO) to build my blog traffic.
Youtube is just icing on the cake such as Twitter and Facebook. I’m sure over a period of time they will contribute a higher percentage of traffic but at this point it won’t hurt me much.
Great post!

Hi Jarrod,
I’m not some much worried about the traffic as I am about the ease in which you can create a video post instead of writing. I see it as an alternative way to blog – not all of us bloggers like writing (small business owners tend to be in this category).
Hi Keisha, other than using YouTube for 2 how-to videos in my blog, I also simply enjoy watching video clips, movie scenes and other great stuff in YouTube.
Hopefully they will be able to win this lawsuit, however, if they don’t, there are plenty of youtube like websites that are increasing in popularity at this very moment and one of them will probably take over. So as long the technology is here, I think we don’t need to worry.
thanks

I really hope you tube keeps it’s head above water, in my opinion NONE of the other video sharing sites have the ease of use as you tube. I do wish you tube would just do away with comments as way too many just nasty. If I had to use another video sharing site it would probably be Vimeo. Just because I think it would become the biggest.

Hi Freaksmack,
Yes, I too, think Vimeo is probably the next line – but you never know… we’ll just have to wait it out and see.
YouTube is the MySpace of video sharing sites — and like MySpace, it’s become a recognizable brand everyone knows. That said, and like MySpace, it’s losing its kick … it’s overrun by spam, awful comments from users, and user-generated remixes of Twilight set to [insert your favorite emo song here].
Like Evelyn, I discovered Tube Mogul a while back, which introduced me to a bonanza video sharing sites — vimeo being my first choice.
I’m also very interested in Viddler as they’re really pushing the boundaries of monetization and timeline comments.

Hi Chris,
I’ll have to check out this TubeMogul site. I don’t know why I’m so stubborn with trying these new places… I just love Youtube so much that I don’t see any use in venturing else where. Regardless of what happens, it’s time to explore. :)
It’s an invaluable resource for all bloggers producing video.
Not only does it make it simple to upload your video content to all the major video sharing networks, it enables you to upload your content to ALL the major players in the same time it takes to upload your content to just one.
Vimeo has positioned itself as more of a professional content (amateur documentary, shorts, music videos, etc.) than user-generated music video remixes and what not, but it’s definitely accessible to everyone.
It’s one of my players, too! Unlike the YouTube player, which can be downright ugly, Vimeo enables bloggers to choose color schemes, size, quality, and more.
AS for Viddler, check this out — you can add your own custom logo to the lower right hand corner, dedicate color scheme, and contextual ads.

Hi Kiessa,
You are really proactive in imagination. Certainly that would be a catastrophe for many no need to talk about YouTube itself.
I’m unable to use YouTube much due to my internet connection. Ileane is broadcasting really nice and useful videos and I attempted to write some posts along with her videos but before I could start writing anything I need to watch those videos. Its damn my internet connection, it is much costly and time consuming. I’m still trying though.

I’m not sure what the basis of the lawsuit is, but since YouTube is owned by Google I’m sure they have enough lawyers to prevent it from being settled any time soon.
Most people don’t realize that once you post a video to a site like YouTube you are really giving them your content. My advice is to always leave a little “something-something” (not sure of the slang spelling on that) out of the video.
This will give you the opportunity to write a blog post containing your keywords and so that people that are hearing impaired can also benefit from the content.

Hi Ileane! I’ve been missing your face! Knowing this makes me feel a little better. I don’t know how else I’ll get my 80s video fix.
Most web video transports will in future by sieved by content producers and providers, largely due to legal issues of copyright and publishing acts, etc.
Nothing was ever meant to be permanent about the platforms and conduits of data, rather the saving of it, for eternity.
The soon arriving iPad will without doubt impact on the way we view content tomorrow which will in turn impact on our delivery systems and doorways.
As soon as we are able to pick up an iPad animated forms will slip through our vision everywhere we look.
Nevertheless an equally valid horizon catalyst will be the impact of html5 on Flash ?

Hi Kiesha,
I was not aware of the law suit. I do use YouTube to make my videos, but I have signed up for many sites to tie them in with Tube Mogul. I think, at least from what I have seen, that Vimeo and Blip TV are being somewhat popular, but I haven’t ventured into using them just yet. We’ll see.
Take care,
Evelyn
