The One Thing That Might Just KILL Your Blogging Success

In this short video, I’ve shared some thoughts about the single greatest threat to your blog, or even your entire blogging career. A few notes are below…

The single greatest threat to your blogging career is YOU!

Four ways you can kill your own blog…

  • Greed – getting anxious to see the return can cause you to mess up early on.
  • Self-doubt – negative thinking can kill your blog.
  • Laziness – success ALWAYS involves hard work.
  • Stupidity – just don’t do anything stupid!

Thanks for the great video full of mouth watering content. I just started to use video myself and I’m really liking it.

I agree with your points that we can be detrimental to our own success. I think this advice shouldn’t be apply to just blogs but to everything else in life.

I appreciate you sharing with us this content.

Hi Brandon. First time commenter here. Great blog by the way. Out of those 4 things, it’s always LAZINESS that comes back to bite me. I’m so good at planning and organizing, but when it comes down to actually doing WORK, I’m so good at procrastinating. Knowing that I’ve got the other 3 down cold helps me stay positive. Now I can focus on beating that lazy bug up.

You really hit on 4 great points. You are right a lot of bloggers come on to the scene thinking they can make millions over night and when they find out it doesn’t work that way they throw in the towel. Its too bad that there are so many scams out there that make people think that it can happen.

Honestly it is tough when first starting out. I did and still do at times have that feeling of self doubt. Its not easy. I mean you sit at your computer generating posts and if no one is reading them it can get kinda lonely and make you think why am I doing this anyways. But I have to say when I create a post the best feeling is to post it and watch the comments come in. Its such a rush I really enjoy it. Its the interaction with my readers that keeps me going. I really enjoy blogging.

You have some good stuff here, I have to take a look around.

    Thanks
    Jim Hardin

    • Brandon says:

Thanks so much, Jim. I definitely think when we bail out too early it doesn’t just hurt a blog, we miss out on a chance to grow.

      • Jim Hardin says:

I have to say I think I have grown through blogging. I think it actually has made me a better communicator. I think it has actually helped me at work. Before when I would recieve an email from someone I would just answer the email. Now when I recieve an email from someone I read it like I would read a post and email back someone like I would comment on a blog. I think reading blogs and commenting on blogs has helped me to respond to people at work better.

  4. Extreme John says:

I haven’t been doing the blogging thing for a super long time at any hardcore level, now I would say I am at a completley different level than I was before.

The hard work pays off as long as you keep at it, by the looks of things lazy bloggers seem to fall out of the trees. I hate seeing blogs not updated for weeks or even months, then come back and write a welcome back post and vanish again for 2 more months. Why bother?

    Brandon,

Thanks for this video. I struggle with self-doubt in many areas of my life, and my blogging is no exception. It’s so true that we are often our own worst enemies. Self-doubt was starting to creep in again with me this week, but this was a timely video making me realize it so I can now take steps to squash it.

  6. Ms. Freeman says:

Couldn’t have said it better, I think I may have been guilty of a couple of the four ways you listed above. I know this because my traffic took a dip during my negative trying to be controversial moment. Now that I am back on the positive uplifting momentum that I started out with well my traffic is returning.

Super thought inspiring video thanks for sharing it. :)

    Fantastic!

Congrats on beginning to use video (read the other post).

It’s great to just watch or even passively listen as you continue to read a post or work on your own projects.

I’m about 2 1/2 months into my DJ blog and it’s been a lot of hard work but every day continues to pay off. I’m developing my writing style, making some great connections and get plenty of experience with the backend of WP.

    Hi Brandon,

Really sound advice, great video and I like Sarge’s example of the coffee shop guy !

Is this also available on YouTube?
(would love to add it to my channel there)

  9. First time I’ve seen you on video Brandon – you nailed it! I like how mentioned self-discipline – it’s extremely important, even more so if you’re blogging full-time because you depend on making it successful.

  10. Definitely enjoyed this blog post, I would have to agree that stupidity and laziness are the top two reasons to impede online success. I will definitely have to read some more of your work. Thanks for keepin’ it real.

  11. I like this type of post Brandon. I wish to see more from you.

By the way, the advice you give is great. I completely agree that “I” am the worst enemy of my blog. those four points are definitely something that we should take notice of.

I would also add burnout as another enemy.

    • While you obviously don’t want to burn yourself out you want to push yourself as much as you possibly can.

I got some great inspiration over the weekend from someone that is just opening up a coffee shop. He’s getting up at 3am and working solidly setting up the store (painting, building etc) till the sun goes down. That’s dedication!

I looked at this example of the coffee shop and thinking about starting websites from my point of view. All we’re doing is moving the mouse the clicking buttons. While we’re using a lot of mental energy it wouldn’t hurt to break a few self regulated bed-time rules and lose a bit of sleep for example to complete a project you’re working on.
.-= Sarge | BeginnerBlogger.com´s last blog ..Guest Post Interview: Henri Junttila =-.

      • That’s true. I love designing websites and blogging. I haven’t experienced burnout yet but I know a couple of my friends who has.

I actually work full-time working at an email marketing company, then I freelance part-time, and I also blog full-time, most of the time from evening until early morning (3-4 am) and I work at 9 the following day. :)

But thanks for the example. I agree though, about losing sleep. I never get enough sleep ;)

    • Brandon says:

Good points, both of you. Nothing wrong with hard work, and burnout is only preventable when we see the larger purpose behind what we’re doing.

  12. Keith says:

Great video Brandon! I interviewed a blogger today, who I watched struggle and has finally paid off for him, I think the link is in the commentluv (man I love that plugin!) If you want to take a peek. He still works full time and is on pace to make mid 5 figures this year. Great guy, and a good example of hard work and determination.
