I have been aggressively opposed to Twitter since…forever? But I didn’t realize the potential for posting blog updates and marketing. What do you do if you don’t even share with friends and family because it would seem embarrassing? LOL Word of Mouth would be best since it’s on a basis of trust but…I can’t see myself doing it.

Perhaps I’m really messing myself up by not using 3 of the most popular forms of advertising: Facebook, Twitter, and Word of Mouth.

The Word-of-Mouth and Commenting is also the best method for me in promoting a blog. I love to make friends even online. This won’t be hard for me. I am comfortable with this.

Annoying is very subjective, to a Twitter user who follows only a hundred people 1 tweet every 2-4 hours could seem spam like, but to a twitter user who is following 10k people then 1 tweet every 2-4 hours will barely ever be noticed in the rapid tweet stream.

I only promote multiple times on Twitter, rarely do I promote the same article more than 1x on Facebook as they tend to linker longer in people pages/history. Also, they can actively become a fan of a page and come back when they want to, or get updates instead of you having to manually promote to their wall’s which I never do for my own articles, I only send a link on my own wall.

Leveraging social media is always a challenge, but remember to consider that online is global and a tweet at 8am in the US could be night time across the globe, so its good to promote every 4-6 hours or so just to make sure you cover all the time zones in my point of view.

Thanks for the comment.

I would have to say to some level you need to care about what people think since these people are the ones coming to read your blog or promote it, but you do make a great point in that many times bloggers get so controlled by the people. Their blog becomes not their blog, but the people’s blog.

There’a a science to blog promotion. Not too much, not too little. Don’t overdo but also don’t be afraid of annoying people. You’ll always annoy some person. You can’t please ‘em all!

I promote my blog aggressively because I believe in it as a content-rich portal. I used to fear what “people” might think but I could care less these days. People who worry about “people” don’t believe fully in themselves.

Hi Brandon,

Couldn’t agree with you more about “Word of mouth” being the best form of promotion ( for those with a non-internet social circle anyway). It’s probably almost neglected as a marketing tool by most website owners in my opinion. And it’s so simple really. As long as you’re spreading something with quality people will be really glad to hear about what you’re doing – and spread the word much further. Everyone’s happy too – which is nice!

I really enjoyed this post. I agree 100% with everything said. We have to use good common sense. Unfortunately many people forget basic notions of manners. It truly amazes me how some people spam and think that what they are doing is marketing – LOL.
