I have somehow amassed a little over 11,000 followers on Twitter, which affords me an opportunity to poll the crowd now and then. Sometimes, when I’m at the end of my feed reading and I’ve got five extra minutes, I’ll send out a brief tweet that says something like, “Anybody have a good blog on social media / blogging / etc. you need another reader for?” I’ve asked this four times in various forms. Surprisingly, I’ve only gotten about two links sent my way.
I’m not sure what to make of that. Maybe nobody is actually listening to me. Maybe nobody has a blog… okay, it’s not that. Maybe people on Twitter just aren’t that into marketing their own stuff… again, that can’t be it. Or maybe, just maybe, we’ve lost all sense of the value for one great fan.
We want the front page in Google, the spike in traffic, the thousands of pageviews and clicks. But what is the power of just one devoted fan? What is the power of one guy (or girl) who will visit your blog every time you post and converse with you, share your post with others, and maybe even buy your products or click on your ads?
Here are some truths we’re sometimes not aware enough of…
Our “readership” is made up 100% out of individuals!
One individual can do wonders for our image, positively or negatively.
The right individual can influence thousands of others.
I’m an individual. (sorry, just a little revelation)
As you write, blog, and promote, don’t forget that each reader, each person is of immeasurable value. You can stare at stats all day, but connecting with one reader might just be a more effective use of your time.
